The University of Delaware men’s basketball team earned its tenth victory of the season on Thursday with an 83-80 upset win over the Sam Houston State Bearkats.
Senior guard Justyn Fernandez led the Blue Hens in scoring in the win, scoring 26 points.
Junior guard Christian Bliss recorded a double-double in the game, scoring 22 points and dishing out 10 assists.
Two other Hens players scored in double digits in the victory: Freshman forward Jayden Taylor (12) and Freshman guard Alex Kazanecki (11).
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories during the game, including blocks (10-1), steals (8-5),
UD also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 52% (30-58) and Sam Houston State 41%(29-70). The Blue Hens also bested the Bearkats from the three-point line, with the team shooting 52 %( 14-27) and Sam Houston State shooting 41%(11-27). Delaware also outshot the Bearkats at the free-throw line, with the team shooting 75%(9-12), and Sam Houston State 69%(11-16).

The game was all tied at 33 at the end of the first half.
UD would find a groove early in this game, as the team took a 17-9 lead with 10:58 left in the opening half. Jayden Taylor and Justyn Fernandez led the charge, scoring 15 of the 17 points.
Sam Houston would punch back by going on a 19-8 run to grab a 28-25 edge with 4:49 remaining in the first half.
The Blue Hens outscored the Bearkats 8-5 for the final minutes of the opening period to head into halftime with the score tied at 33.
UD takes home an 83-80 win!
The University of Delaware came out swinging in the early minutes of the second half by dashing off on a 17-6 run to take a 50-39 advantage with 15:09 left in the game. Sophomore forward Macon Emory, Justyn Fernandez, and Alex Kazanecki confused the Sam Houston defenders during this time, scoring 15 of the 17 points.
The Bearkats weren’t done fighting as they outscored the Hens 20-10 to slice the deficit to one point (60-59) with 9:10 remaining in the second half.
Two minutes later, CJ Beaumont drained a three-pointer to give Sam Houston a 64-63 advantage with 7:32 left in the game.
During the next four minutes, the game’s intensity increased as the lead shifted repeatedly between the two teams. UD managed to score six straight points at the tail end during this stretch, giving them a 73-69 advantage.
Fast forward to the 1:25 minute mark, where Jayden Taylor sank a layup to give the Blue Hens a 78-74 edge.
Delaware would hang on by scoring five more points in the final minute to seal an 83-80 win over the Bearkats.
