Mahogany Cottingham Shines with 17 Points in Delaware State’s 74-58 Victory Over Bloomfield

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team earned its second win of the season on Wednesday with a 74-58 victory over the Bloomfield College Bears.

Junior guard Mahogany Cottingham led the team in scoring in the win with 17 points.

Three other DSU players who scored in double-digits were sophomore forward Ericka Huggins (13), senior guard Aniyah Jones (12), and freshman center Liliana Harrison (10).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (32-28), fast-break points (8-2), points off of turnovers (16-13), turnovers (17-22), blocks (1-0), steals (12-10), assists (15-6) and rebounds (47-42).

Delaware State also bested the Bears from the three-point line, with the team shooting 50.0( 8-16) and Bloomfield shooting 19.0(4-21). The Hornets also outshot the Bears at the free-throw line, with the team shooting 75.0(18-24), and Bloomfield 69.2(18-26).

Delaware State trails by one at the end of the first quarter.

Bloomfield came out strong in the early minutes of this match by jumping out to an 11-4 edge with 3:56 remaining in the opening period.

The Hornets stung back by going on a 10-5 run for the rest of the first quarter to head into the second trailing by two points (16-14).

DSU leads by seven points at the end of the first half.

Delaware State rode the momentum from the late first quarter into the second, outscoring the Bears 23-14 in the period and taking a 37-30 advantage into halftime.

 Mahogany Cottingham and Freshman guard Nevaeh Reaves led the charge during the run, scoring 14 of the team’s 23 points.

The Hornets lead by 17 at the end of the third quarter.

DSU continued to pull away from Bloomfield in the third quarter, outscoring the Bears 25-15 to have a comfortable 62-45 lead heading into the fourth.

The trio of Mahogany Cottingham, Ericka Huggins, and Aniyah Jones caused trouble for Bloomfield defenders, scoring 20 of the team’s points.
