McQueen scores 17 & Marsh records a double-double in Goldey-Beacom’s 74-69 win over Jefferson

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team took home their ninth victory of the season Wednesday with a 74-69 win over the Jefferson University Rams.

Sophomore guard Zakari McQueen led the team in scoring in the win with 17 points.

Junior forward Zayon Marsh recorded a double-double in the game with 1o rebounds and 13 points.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Freshman guard Tre Powell (12), Junior guard Shane Taylor (12), and Senior forward David Robinson (11).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (5-4), bench points (15-7), and rebounds (40-29).

Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 43.8% (21-48) and Jefferson shooting 41.7% ( 25-60).

GBC also outshot the Rams from the three-point line, with the team shooting 44.0%(11-25) and Jefferson shooting 14.8%(4-27).

Goldey-Beacom leads by four points at the end of the first half.

The Lightning didn’t waste any time putting up points on the board in this matchup by taking a 10-4 edge with 16:46 remaining in the opening period.  Zakari McQueen drained back-to-back three-pointers during this run.

In the next eight minutes and 43 seconds, Jefferson would come roaring back by outscoring GBC 17-8 to grab a 21-18 advantage with 7:20 left in the first half.

Goldey-Beacom would strike back by going on a 12-5 run to end the first half with a 30-26 edge. Tre Powell, David Robinson, and Zayon Marsh had the hot hand during this time, scoring ten of the 12 points.

The Lightning takes home a 74-69 victory!

GBC carried over its late momentum from the first half into the early minutes of the second, going on an 11-4 run to push its advantage to 41-30 with 16:12 left in the game. Zakari McQueen would continue to be on fire from the three-point line by hitting two from downtown during this time.

Fast forward to the 6:51 minute mark, where the Rams’ Ashton Miller sunk a three-pointer to slice the deficit to three points (51-48).

Seconds later, Goldey would not lose their lead as they scored six straight points to extend their edge to 57-48 with 5:27 remaining in the second life.

Jefferson punched right back by outscoring the Lightning 8-2 to pull the score to 59-56 with 2:48 left in the game.

 Shane Taylor would make sure Goldey-Beacom pulled this win out by scoring seven of the team’s last 15 points to seal a 74-69 victory over the Rams.
