The University of Delaware women’s basketball team snapped their five-game losing streak on Friday with a 79-69 victory over the Hampton Lady Pirates.
Senior guard Ella Wanzer led the team in scoring in the win with 20 points.
Four other Hens players scored in double digits: senior forward Chloe Wilson (12), senior guards Tara Cousins, Rebecca Demeke (16), and senior forward Michelle Ojo (14).
UD had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (16-2), points off of turnovers (20-11), turnovers (14-18), and steals (7-5).
UD also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 45.5 (25-55) and Hampton 36.9(24-65). Delaware also outshot the Lady Pirates at the three-point line, with the team shooting 56.5 (13-23)and Hampton 37.5(9-24).

The Blue Hens lead by 12 points at the end of the first quarter.
Delaware came out flying in the early minutes of the opening period, grabbing an 11-2 edge with 7:14 left on the clock in the quarter. The Hens were on fire from the three-point line during this run, as Rebecca Demeke, Tara Cousins, and Ella Wanzer each drained one.
UD padded 13 more points to their score for the rest of the first period to take a 24-12 advantage into the second. Wanzer, Demeke, and Michelle Ojo had the hot hand during this time, scoring ten of the team’s 13 points.
Delaware leads by 18 at the end of the first half.
In the second quarter, Tara Cousins, Michelle Ojo, and Ella Wanzer were the stars. The trio scored 18 of the team’s 21 points to give the Blue Hens a 45-27 lead heading into halftime.
UD holds a 17-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
Fast forward to the 6:34 minute mark in the third quarter, where the Blue Hens edge would expand to 21 points (54-33) when Rebecca Demeke made a layup. Seconds later, Demeke would sink a three-pointer to give Delaware a 57-35 advantage.
Hampton would rally back in the later minutes of the third quarter, by outscoring UD 14-9 to slice the deficit to 17 points (66-49).
UD takes home a 79-69 victory!
The Lady Pirates would continue on their hot streak in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, as they dashed off to a 20-3 run to cut the deficit to nine points (69-60) with 3:54 remaining in the game.
Delaware would not lose their lead as the team outscored Hampton 10-6 to seal a 79-69 victory.
