Wilmington University picks up a sweep versus Holy Family

The Wilmington University softball team earned a sweep on Friday as the team picked up two wins versus the Holy Family University Tigers with a 10-3 victory and an 8-6 triumph.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University leads by one run at the end of the first inning.

Holy Family would get on the scoreboard first in this matchup, as Paige Tidaback hit an RBI single up the middle to give her team a 1-0 lead in the top of the opening inning.

WilmU would respond in the bottom of the first when Senior outfielder Sara Miller slapped a two-run homer to right center to give her team a 2-1 edge.

WilmU holds a two-run lead at the end of the second inning.

The Wildcats would widen their lead in the bottom of the second inning, as the team scored one run on two hits to take a 3-1 advantage. 

After two singles and a runner stealing second base, junior outfielder Taylor Gillis would be the next batter up, as she would push in a run on the ground to expand the team’s lead to 3-1.

The Wildcats go up by four at the end of the third inning.

Wilmington would continue to add to their lead in the third, as senior Haley Downin smacked a two-run homer to left center to give her team a 5-1 advantage.

Wilmington University leads by eight runs at the end of the fourth inning.

The Wildcats would continue to pour on the runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the team scored four runs on two hits and one error to take a 9-1 edge.

Two of the runs came from the mistakes of the Tigers, as graduate student infielder Sam Freeland would score thanks to a throwing error by the pitcher, and senior shortstop Lexi Moore went home on a wild pitch.

Junior outfielder Tristyn Stewart and senior infielder Bri Coyle would score the other two runs in the inning, as Stewart had an RBI bunt single, and Coyle would send a runner home a Sac fly.

The Wildcats take home a 10-3 win!

Holy Family would cut into Wilmington University’s lead just a little in the top of the fifth, as the team scored two runs on one error to take the score to 9-3.

WilmU would add one last run to their edge in the bottom of the inning, as senior outfielder Isabella Eleazar would go home on a fielder’s choice to give her team a 10-3 lead.

Pitching Recap:

Junior starting pitcher Kylee Gunkel went four innings, gave up three hits, one run, one earned run, struck out seven batters, and earned the win.

The bullpen consisted of two relievers, who combined to give up zero hits and two runs, two earned runs, two walks, and struck out two batters.

Pitcher Haley Downin closed out the game by going three innings, striking out two batters, and earning the save.
