Wilmington University moves winning streak to three with 5-4 victory over Barry University

The Wilmington University baseball team moved their record to 7-2 on Wednesday with a 5-4 victory over Barry University Buccaneers. With the win, WilmU marks their first win over Barry in their NCAA play history (1-6).

Game Recap:

Wilmington trails by one run at the end of the first inning.

The Wildcats would start the game with their lineup going three and out in the top of the first, but Barry’s lineup would have a different result in the bottom of the inning.

Evan Wickeri would push in the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning as he hit an RBI double to left center to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead.

WilmU leads by one run at the end of the third inning.

The Wildcats lineup would wake up in the top of the third inning, as the team scored four runs on two hits to take a 4-1 edge.

Senior shortstop Matt Warrington would start the inning off by earning a trip to first base with a walk. Then, the next three batters would walk, hit a single, and earn another walk. A baserunner also got caught at second base to record the first out the top of third. 

Sophomore infielder Tyler Pirrung would come up to the plate with the bases loaded and would get a run home by getting hit by a pitch to tie the game at one.

It would be a trend after that, as sophomore first baseman Mason DeLuca and junior outfielder Trevor Adamo would push runs home by getting hit by a pitch from Barry’s pitcher to extend the score to 3-1.

Junior infielder Zach Walker would walk up to the plate next and slapped an RBI single to the pitcher to push Wilmington’s lead to 4-1.

The Buccaneers would waste no time answering back in the bottom of the third inning, as the team scored two runs on two hits to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The scoring plays of the third for Barry would come from a wild pitch, and then Braden Forchic hit an RBI single to right field.

The game was tied at four runs at the end of the sixth inning. 

Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Buccaneers’ Evan Wickeri would push in his second run of the game when he hit a single up the middle to tie the match at four.

Wilmington University takes home a 5-4 victory!

After scoring four runs in the third, the WilmU batters were silenced for the next five innings, as they only produced one hit during that time.

The Wildcats would get something to go their way in the top of the ninth, as Tyler Pirrung would slap an RBI single to right center field to give his team a 5-4 lead.

WilmU would escape with the 5-4 victory, but Barry would make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth with a baserunner reaching third base, but they never made it home.

Pitching Recap:

Graduate student starting pitcher Derek Huff went one inning and gave up two hits, one run, and one earned run.

 The bullpen would be used in full force in this one, as nine pitchers combined to give up five hits, three runs, three earned runs, seven walks, and five strikeouts.

Freshman Garrett Quinn earned the win by pitching one inning, walking one batter, and striking out one batter.

Senior pitcher Dom Grady earned the save, as he went one inning and gave up one walk.
