The Goldey-Beacom College baseball team earned a split on Friday by losing their first game 18-2 to the Mercy University Mavericks, but they would take home a win in the second with a score of 9-2.
Goldey-Beacom takes a four-run lead in the fourth inning.
The starting pitchers for each team came out dominating in the first three innings as they held each lineup scoreless and only let a combined two hits.
But that would all change in the top of the fourth inning when the Lightning would score four runs on two hits to take the lead in the game.
The inning would start with Mercy’s pitcher hitting the first two GBC batters, and then the third batter would earn a walk, for the bases would be loaded for junior infielder Jimmy Hallman.
Hallman would swing a two-run double into play to give Goldey-Beacom a 2-0 lead.
Three batters later, sophomore outfielder Anthony Charles would hit a two-out, two RBI triple to extend his team’s edge to 4-0.
After the fourth inning, GBC’s starting pitcher, Justin Jump, exited the game, as he would leave with two hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.
The Lightning would score two more runs in the sixth inning.
Two innings later, Goldey-Beacom would light up the scoreboard once again, as they would score two runs on two hits.
Senior infielder Darin Miller would start the sixth inning off by hitting a single and then running to second on a wild pitch.
Then, two batters later, junior infielder Braden Kolmansberger would earn a walk and steal second base.
Junior catcher Nick Harkins would be up next, as he would hit a two-RBI single to push the Lightning’s lead to 6-0.
GBC would add two more runs in the seventh inning
In the top of the seventh inning, Jimmy Hallman would continue to come up clutch as he would hit a two-RBI double to give Goldey an 8-0 advantage.
The Lightning takes home a 9-2 win!
Goldey-Beacom wouldn’t be done scoring just yet, as Nick Harkins would score a wild pitch in the eighth to bring their lead to 9-0.
Mercy would finally score in the ninth inning off John Nisco’s two-run homer, but the Lightning would still win 9-2.
GBC’s pitching was fantastic in the victory, as the staff gave up a combined eight hits, two runs, two earned runs, five walks, eight strikeouts, and hit two batters.
