Five Goldey-Beacom players score in double-digits in 113-109 season-opening win over Roberts Wesleyan

Goldey-Beacom would lead by 22 points at the end of the first half.

The game started with the Lightning jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead with 18:24 left in the opening period. Zayon Marsh scored all four points for his team by getting two layups to go in.

In the next 12 minutes and 72 seconds, Goldey-Beacom would outscore Roberts Wesleyan 36-18 to push their advantage to 40-19 with 5:52 remaining in the first half. Nazim Derry, sophomore guard Omari Banks, and Cardin Joubert had the magic touch on the run, as the trio scored 20 of the team’s 36 points.

Goldey’s defense was also a key reason why they were able to build a large lead, as the team had three blocks, 12 defensive rebounds, and one steal during that stretch.

Fast forward to the 2:06 mark in the opening half, where Joubert would drain a three-point shot to extend the Lightning’s lead to 24 with a score of 54-30.

In the final minutes of the first half, the Redhawks would outscore GBC 8-6 to cut the deficit to a still hefty 22 points (60-38).

Lightning takes home a 113-109 victory!

Goldey-Beacom would start the second half by dashing off on a 14-8 run, which upped their advantage to 74-46 with 16:20 remaining in the game. Cardin Joubert, Zayon Marsh, and Ayshion Centeno were on fire during that stretch, as the trio scored all 14 of the team’s points.

Four minutes and 14 seconds later, Caleb Bates sunk a layup to push the Lightning’s edge to 31 points (89-58) with 12:06 left in the second half.

Starting at the 11:39 minute mark, Roberts Wesleyan showed some fight as the team went on a 36-14 run to slice the lead to nine points (103-94) with 4:28 left in the game.

Goldey was able to push their edge back up to double digits (105-94) when Marsh hit a layup with two minutes and 58 seconds left in the second half.

The Redhawks would continue their comeback in this game, as the team cut the Lightning’s edge to two points (111-109) when Marat Belhouchet hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the match.

Goldey-Beacom would halt Roberts Wesleyan’s comeback attempt, as Nazim Derry would hit two free throws to seal a 113-109 victory.
