Blue Hens fly out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter.
The game started with Towson winning the coin toss and deferring to get the ball first in the second half.
UD’s first drive of the game would start at the own 25-yard line, and it did not take the team very long to score, as on the opening play, quarterback Zach Marker would find running back Marcus Yarns for a short pass, who would take it 75 yards for a touchdown to give their team a 7-0 lead with 14:43 left in the first quarter.
After a three-and-out from the Tigers’ offense, Delaware would start their next possession backed up at their own seven-yard line with 13:33 remaining in the opening quarter. The Hens would march 93 yards in seven plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns dashing up the middle eight yards for the touchdown to push his team’s advantage to 14-0 with 9:30 left in the first quarter.
Other than the touchdown, another highlight of the drive was on third and seven at UD’s ten-yard line, when quarterback Zach Marker found his wide receiver Jourdan Townsend for a 54-yard completion to set up the team at Towson’s 36-yard line.
So, would the Tigers answer back on their next drive? No, their quarterback Nathan Kent would be intercepted by the Blue Hens defensive back Tyron Herring on the first play, and he would set up his team at the University of Delaware’s 35-yard line.
The Hens would take advantage of the turnover the defense gave them, as they turned it into a 65-yard, ten-play drive, which concluded with their running back Marcus Yarns rushing up the middle for the three-yard score to give the team a 20-0 edge with 3:51 left in the first quarter. Nate Reed would miss the extra point for UD.
Delaware’s good luck would keep churning in the quarter, as Towson’s Charles Peeples would fumble the ball on the kick return, and the Hens Ty Davis would recover it at the Tigers 27-yard line.
UD’s offense would not waste the short field the special teams gave them, as they drove 27 yards in six plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns rushing up the middle for five yards for the touchdown to give his team a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Hens would be successful on a two-point conversion after the scoring play.
The Blue Hens defense was an unstoppable unit in the first quarter, as they only allowed the Tigers offense to move 30 yards in three drives.
The Hens would have a 38-point lead at the end of the first half.
UD’s next scoring drive would start at the own 42-yard line with 14:06 remaining in the second quarter. The University of Delaware would fly 58 yards down the field in four plays to end with quarterback Zach Marker finding his wide receiver Braden Brose for the 12-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 35-0 lead with 12:04 left in the first half.
Other than the touchdown, another highlight on the drive came on third and three at their own 49-yard line when Marker found his receiver Joshua Youngblood short, who would take the completion 39 yards to the Towson 12-yard line.
Two drives later, the Blue Hens would continue to add to their score, as they would go 80 yards in 16 plays to end with kicker Nate Reed booting a 29-yard field goal to push the score to 38-0 at the end of the first half.
UD would lead by 45 after three-quarters of play.
It might have been of a different half, but the Delaware offense would keep rolling as their next scoring drive would start at their own 36-yard line with 12:32 remaining in the third quarter. UD would drive 64 yards in five plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns scoring his fifth touchdown of the day to extend his team’s edge to 45-0 with 9:31 left in the third.
Towson would finally get on the scoreboard on the second drive in the third quarter, where they would march 72 yards in nine plays to end with kicker Keegan Vaughan making a 31-yard field goal to cut the score to 45-3.
The Blue Hens would answer right back with a drive that would go 62 yards in eight plays to end, with kicker Nate Reed hitting a 23-yard field goal to expand the score to 48-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Delaware takes home a 51-13 victory over Towson!
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers’ offense found some life as they outscored the Blue Hens 10-3 during that time. They would also outgain UD offense in the final period by moving the ball 110 yards down the field in two drives, and the Hens had 85 in three.
But it wouldn’t really matter as the University of Delaware took home a convincing 51-13 win over Towson.
