Blue Hens extend winning streak to five with 47-3 win over Hampton

Blue Hens lead by 17 points after one-quarter of play.

The game would start with Delaware winning the coin toss, but the team would defer to get the ball first in the second half. Hampton would start their first drive of the game at their own 25-yard line and struggled to get anything going as they only went four yards on three plays before having to punt the ball away.

The Pirates might have had a hard time moving the ball on their first series, but UD did not, as the team went 57 yards in four plays to end, with running back Marcus Yarns rushing eight yards up the middle for a touchdown to give his squad a 7-0 lead with 11:51 left in the first quarter.

So, would Hampton answer back with a score of their own? No, their next drive would only last five plays, and they gained 40 yards before they had to punt the ball back to Hens.

The Delaware offense didn’t need to come out as the Pirates’ Tristan Heaton’s punt would get returned by Jourdan Townsend, who took it 82 yards for the score to give the Blue Hens a 14-0 edge with 9:17 remaining in the opening quarter.

Two drives later, the University of Delaware would start its next scoring series at their own 18-yard line with 3:18 left on the clock in the first. The Blue Hens would march 76 yards on eight plays to end, with kicker Nate Reed booting a 22-yard field goal to expand his team’s advantage to 17-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The highlight play on this scoring drive was on first and ten from their own 31-yard line when Hens quarterback Zach Marker found his wide receiver Jourdan Townsend for the 59-yard reception to set them up at Hampton’s ten-yard line.

Delaware would lead by 35 points at the end of the first half.

UD would continue its scoring party in their first drive of the second quarter, where the team would start on their own 29-yard line at the 14:42 minute mark. The Hens would cruise 71 yards in 11 plays to end, with running back Marcus Yarns dashing up the middle for four yards for the touchdown to push the lead to 24-0 with 9:29 left in the first half.

After a quick three-and-out series from Hampton, the Blue Hens would continue to roll on offense, as the team flew 73 yards down the field in six plays to end, with quarterback Zach Marker rushing 18 yards to the end zone to give his team a 31-0 edge with 5:32 left in the second quarter.

The Pirates would start their first scoring drive of the game at their own 30-yard line with 5:32 left in the first half. Hampton would charge 57 yards down the field in eight plays to end, with kicker Brian Csehosk hitting a 30-yard field goal to cut the lead to 31-3 with 1:48 remaining in the second quarter.

Delaware would answer right back as the team would start their next drive as their own 30-yard line. UD drove 68 yards in six plays to end with quarterback Zach Marker finding his wide receiver Joshua Youngblood for the 10-yard touchdown reception to push the score to 38-3 at the end of the first half.

The Blue Hens defense was on mission in the first half, as the unit held the Pirates to under 20 yards in five of their seven drives.

The second half would open with UD starting with the ball at their own their 35-yard line at the 14:54 minute mark. The Hens would drive 57 yards on 18 plays to end, with kicker Nate Reed making a 25-yard field goal to expand the team’s advantage to 41-3 at the end of the third quarter.

Fast forward to the 11:16 minute mark in the fourth quarter, where the University of Delaware would start their final scoring drive on the game at their own 12-yard line. Despite being backed up in their own territory, the Hens would charge 88 yards down the field in ten plays to end, with quarterback Nick Minicucci finding his wide receiver James Collins for the 27-yard touchdown reception to seal a 47-3 win.

The Blue Hens’ defense continued their solid play in the second half, as they only allowed the Pirates offense to gain 72 yards in their four drives.
