The Delaware State University infielder Trey Paige was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 17th round with the 515th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
Paige’s selection is the second-earliest a DSU baseball player has gotten chosen in the draft by an MLB team. Eric Carter has the title of the earliest draft pick for the program, as he was picked in the 10th round in 2004 by the Seattle Mariners.
Trey joins 13 other Delaware State baseball players who have been selected by an MLB team and is the first Hornet player to hear his name to be called since Garrett Lawson was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2019.
The MEAC Player of the Year ended his four-year career at Del State with a .372 batting average, 203 hits, 136 RBIs, 147 runs, and 32 home runs in 153 games.
Paige leaves the program as one of the All-Time Hornets as he is in the top three of the categories of total home runs (32), walks (105), and doubles (46).
