Blue Hens lead by two points after one-quarter of play.
The game started with Delaware jumping out to a quick 6-2 advantage with 5:15 left in the first quarter. The Hens’ defense was solid during this run as they grabbed three defensive rebounds, one steal, and one block.
Two minutes and 79 seconds later, VCU outscored the University of Delaware 8-4 to tie the game at 10 with 2:36 remaining in the opening quarter.
Starting at the 1:57 minute mark, the Blue Hens would respond back by outscoring the Rams 6-4 to take a 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Michelle Ojo scored four of UD’s six points during the run.
Hens lead by 12 points at the end of the first half.
The University of Delaware would come out blazing in the early minutes of the second quarter as the team went on a 12-2 run to push their lead to 28-16 with 5:07 left in the first half. On the run, the Hens were feeling it from the three-point line as fifth-year guard Jewel Smalls and Tara Cousins would each drain a shot from there.
The scoring would be even as each team scored eight points during the rest of the second quarter, but the Blue Hens would still have a 12-point (36-24) lead going into halftime.
The University of Delaware leads by 18 after three-quarters of play.
As the second half opened, the Blue Hens would remain burning bright as the team went on a 15-4 to extend their advantage to 51-28 with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. Kharis Idom scored seven of the Hens’ 15 points on the run.
UD would score three more points in the third quarter to end with a dominating 54-36 lead.
Blue Hens take home a 63-50 win!
In the early minutes of the fourth quarter, the Rams would fight their way back into this one, as the team went on a 14-4 run to cut the lead to eight points (58-50) with 2:20 left in the game.
VCU’s comeback attempt would be halted as the Blue Hens would score five straight points to seal a 63-50 victory over the Rams.
