CAA Finals: Blue Hens earn CAA Championship title, will face #4 Maryland in the NCAA Tournament

Blue Hens lead by four points after one-quarter of play

The game started with the University of Delaware dashing out to an 11-2 advantage with 6:38 left in the first quarter. Ty Battle and Tyi Skinner would score seven of the 11 points on the run. Another impact player on this run was Graduate Student forward Lizzie Oleary, who had two points, and two assists.

Twenty-seven seconds later, Drexel would outscore the Hens 13-8 to end the first quarter trailing only by four points (19-15). Keishana Washington would score eight of the Dragons’ 13 points on the run.

Hens hold a four-point lead at the end of the first half

Delaware would start the second quarter by flying off on a 12-8 run, which pushed their lead to 31-23 with 2:05 left in the first half. The trio Jasmine Dickey, Tyi Skinner, and redshirt senior guard Jewel Smalls would score ten of the 12 points on the run.

Starting at the 1:34 minute mark, the Dragons would outscore the Blue Hens 8-4 to pull within four points (35-31) of the lead at the end of the first half.

Delaware leads by 14 at the end of the third quarter

The second half would start with the University of Delaware setting the court on fire as the team scored ten straight points to extend their lead to 45-31 with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter. Jasmine Dickey scored five of the ten points on the run. Rebounding was also a factor on the run as the team collected ten rebounds. Delaware’s defense also stepped their game up another level on this run, as they had one block, and three steals.

Almost four minutes later, the Blue Hens would push their lead to 17 points ( 51-34) as Dickey would get a layup to go in at the 1:11 minute mark.

Seven seconds later, Drexel would outscore the Hens 4-1 to cut the lead at the end of the third quarter to 14 points (52-38).

Blue Hens are CAA CHAMPIONS!

The Dragons would claw right back into this game as the fourth quarter started by going on a 13-8 run to trim Delaware’s lead to nine points (60-51) with 3:25 left to play in the game.

Starting at the 2:30 minute mark, Drexel would continue to have all the momentum as the team went on an 8-2 run to pull within three points of the lead (62-59) with 37 seconds left in the game. The Blue Hens helped the Dragons out by turning the ball over three times during that time.

The University of Delaware would close the door on Drexel’s comeback attempt as Jewel Smalls would hit a free throw with two seconds left to seal the 63-59 win and a ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
