Blue Hens Defense Key in 24-3 upset of William & Mary

Blue Hens lead by four points after one-quarter of play

The first points of this game came the way of William & Mary as the team marched 68 yards on 12 plays for the offense to stall out at Delaware’s seven-yard line to kick a chip shot field goal to give them a 3-0 lead with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

The Blue Hens’ first drive would start at the own 25-yard line after the Tribe’s score, which the team went 27 yards on eight plays to punt on William & Mary’s 48-yard line. The Hens offense would not get off the field after the punt as the team’s long snapper Jake Reed forced the Tribe’s Malachi Imoh to cough up the ball, which Noah Plack would recover to set up his team at W&M’s 12-yard line.

Now with momentum on their side, Delaware went 12 yards on two plays for Dejoun Lee to rush for a 12-yard touchdown to put his team up 7-3 with 3:32 left in the first quarter.

Delaware leads by 11 at the end of the first half

After the Blue Hens defense forced on a turnover on downs, the team’s offense would start their drive at William & Mary’s 34-yard line. The Hens would go 34 yards on six plays for quarterback Zach Gwynn to find wide receiver James Collins for the 25-yard touchdown catch.

Hens add three more points to their lead in the third quarter

The Blue Hens would receive the ball first in the second half, which the offense would go 39 yards on six plays for a 48 yard made field goal from junior kicker Ryan Coe to extend the lead to 17-3 with 11:37 left in the third quarter.

The highlight play of this scoring drive was when quarterback Zach Gwynn found wide receiver James Collins for the 31-yard reception to set up their team at the Tribe’s 37-yard line.

Delaware’s defense had the W&M’s offense stifled in this quarter as the team punted twice and was intercepted by linebacker Johnny Buchanan on their last drive of the third quarter.

Blue Hens win 24-3!

The interception would set the Blue Hens up at W&M’s 36-yard line, which the team would drive 36 yards in four plays for Zach Gwynn to find wide receiver Jourdan Townsend for the eight-yard touchdown reception to expand the team’s lead to 24-3 with 13:58 left in the game.

Delaware’s defense would take it the rest of the way as they forced William & Mary to turn the ball over on downs on all three of their drives in the fourth quarter to seal a 24-3 win.
