2-0: Blue Hens earn a 27-10 win over Saint Francis in Home Opener

Blue Hens lead by three after one-quarter of play

The game started with Delaware electing to receive the ball at the kickoff, which the Red Flash kicker booted 64 yards to the Blue Hens one-yard line. Dejoun Lee would return the kick for 14 yards to set the Blue Hens up at their own 15-yard line on their opening drive.

Lee would start the Hens opening drive with a bang as he rushed for 21 yards on the opening play, but quarterback Nolan Henderson would get sacked on the next play. After the sack, the Hens had a couple of small gains, but not enough to keep the drive alive.

Fast forward to the 6:11 minute mark, where Delaware would have a nine-play, 54-yard drive, which would result in a made field goal from Ryan Coe. The field goal gave the Hens a 3-0 lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter.

Blue Hens quarterback Henderson found his targets on this drive as he went four for five and threw for 50 yards. Henderson’s highlight play on the drive was when he found tight end Braden Brose to push his team to Saint Francis’s 47-yard line.

Hens take a ten-point lead at the end of the first half

The beginning of the second quarter started with the Red Flash scoring three points on 14 plays, a 57-yard drive, which would tie the game. The highlight play of this drive was SFU’s quarterback Jyron Russell finding wide receiver Kahtero Summers for a 19 yard gain, which pushed the team to the Blue Hens’ 29-yard line.

Delaware’s next scoring drive would start at the 14:52 minute mark in the second quarter as the team marched 73 yards in 11 plays as Ryan Coe would make a field goal to give his team a 6-3 lead with 9:28 left in the first half.

Hens running back Khory Spruill was the leader of the scoring drive as he rushed for 24 yards on five carries.

On the Red Flash’s next drive, it would only last five plays as the Hens linebacker Liam Trainer would intercept Russell’s pass to set up Delaware at their own 42-yard line.

The first touchdown of the game would be scored by the Blue Hens as the team marched 58 yards on 14 plays, which resulted in Dejoun Lee running the ball into the endzone at the yard one line for seven points. Lee’s touchdown would give the Hens a 13-3 lead with 15 seconds left in the first half.

The biggest yardage play on this drive was when Delaware’s quarterback Nolan Henderson found his wide receiver Gene Coleman II for 13 yards, which set their team up at SFU’s five-yard line.

Saint Francis also did their part to help the Hens march down the field as the team had two penalties for ten yards on the scoring drive.

Delaware holds a ten-point lead

The Blue Hens’ next scoring drive would start at SFU’s 36-yard line with 6:47 left in the third quarter. The Hens would march down the field in three plays, and 35 yards as Anthony Paoletti would find the endzone on a one-yard carry. Paoletti’s touchdown would give Delaware a 20-3 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter.

The highlight play of the scoring drive was when the Blue Hens quarterback Nolan Henderson found his running back Dejoun Lee for 34 yards to set up their team at Saint Francis’s one-yard line.

The last scoring play of the third quarter would come from SFU as their quarterback Jyron Russell rushed 66 yards ( not a typo) down to the field for seven points. Russell’s touchdown would decrease Delaware’s lead to 20-10.

Blue Hens win 27-10

Delaware’s last scoring drive would come early in the fourth quarter, as the team marched 75 yards in nine plays to see Henderson find his wide receiver Thyrick Pitts for a 30-yard receiving touchdown. Pitts’ touchdown would seal the win for the Blue Hens as the team would take home a 27-10 win.

Pitts would rack up over 55 receiving yards on the Hens’ last scoring drive.
