4-0: Blue Hens keep rolling with 34-14 win over Hornets

Blue Hens get a ten-point lead in the first quarter

The first scoring drive of the game did not happen until the 6:35 minute mark of the first quarter, which would be in favor of Delaware.

The Delaware offense would start their drive at the Hornets 20 yard line, which was thanks to Hens defensive back Justis Henley forcing a fumble and Kedrick Whitehead recovering it.

The rushing game was the game plan on this drive as all 20 yards gained came from the run, which the touchdown did too as Dejoun Lee ran seven yards for the first score of the game. Lee’s touchdown gave the Blue Hens a 7-0 lead.

At 4:35 minute mark in the first quarter, Delaware would start another scoring drive which this time at their own 25-yard line. Hens quarterback Nolan Henderson opened up the drive with two big passing plays to Thyrick Pitts. The first one was a 27-yard catch and the second one was a 28-yard catch which set Blue Hens up at DSU’s 20-yard line.

After those big plays, the drive stalled, but the Hens would still get a 38 yard Ryan Coe field goal which extended his team’s lead to 10-0.

The Delaware State offense could not muster any offense against the Blue Hens defense as the team forced an interception, fumble, and three punts.

Delaware takes a 24 point lead into the half

The Hens first scoring drive of the second quarter would be at the 8:10 minute mark, at their own 44-yard line. Delaware would march 56 yards in ten plays for Dejoun Lee’s 14-yard rushing touchdown, which gave his team a 17-0 lead with 2:40 left in the first half.

Once again, the rushing game played a huge part in a scoring drive as 41 out of the 56 yards came from the run.

Delaware’s defense would set their offense up at Delaware State’s 35-yard line with defensive back Riah Burton picking off DSU’s quarterback Jared Lewis.

The Hens offense would march 35 yards in six plays for Nolan Henderson to find Thyrick Pitts for the nine-yard touchdown to push their team’s lead to 24-0 with 19 seconds left in the second quarter.

The other highlight play on the scoring drive was Henderson finding redshirt sophomore tight end Braden Brose for 18 yards to set the team up at the DSU’s nine-yard line.

Hornets get on the board in the third quarter

The Blue Hens received the ball to start the second half which they returned it to their own 39-yard line.

Delaware would march 61 yards in five plays for Nolan Henderson to run one yard for the touchdown to put his team up 31-0 with 13:09 left in the third quarter.

The highlight play on this drive was Dejoun Lee running for 53 yards to set up the Hens at DSU’s eight-yard line.

At the 7:24 minute mark in the third quarter, DSU’s defensive back Daniel Douglas would block Delaware’s punt, which was at the 10-yard line, and it would be recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Trey Gross. The blocked punt for a touchdown would cut the Blue Hens lead to 31-7.

Blue Hens win 34-14

Delaware’s last scoring drive would see them march 34 yards in 10 plays for a 24 yard Ryan Coe field goal which gave the team a 34-7 lead with 13:21 left in the game.

The highlight play of this drive was Dejoun Lee running 23 yards to set up the Hens at DSU’s 31-yard line.

DSU’s offense could not score in this game, but their special teams did as the team scored on another blocked punt to cut the lead to 34-14 with 8:35 left in the game.

Delaware’s defense would seal the win when linebacker Jack Dinicola picked off DSU’s Jared Lewis with 24 seconds left in the game.
