Caldwell scores two runs in the third inning
The toughest inning for Wilmington’s pitcher Haley Downin, was the third inning when she gave up two runs to Caldwell.
Anyssia Ramirez would hit a single to the right side of the field, which would score Alaina Zavala to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Paige Sandoval would get Caldwell’s next run on the board as she hit a single to center field, which would score her teammate Emma Cooney to give their team a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Wildcats would get back one of those runs as Annie Davila would ground out to the shortstop, but it would allow Danielle Hess to score. Hess’s score cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning.
Wildcats score three runs in the fourth inning
The next run for Wilmington came by a Caldwell throwing error, as it allowed Haley Downin to score to tie the game at two in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Danielle Hess would come up to the plate as she would hit a double to center field, which allowed Isabella Eleazar to score to give WilmU a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.
The next batter would be Sara Miller, who would hit a single up the middle of the field, which would score Hess to give Wilmington a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning.
It was now up to Downin, who threw for five scoreless innings after that two-run first inning. Downin went six innings, gave up three hits, two runs, two earned runs, six walks, three strikeouts, and earned the win.
In the top of the seventh inning, Alexandra Ballester came out to close the game out, and she did just that she shut down the Cougars hitters, which would seal a 4-2 win.
