DSU scores two runs in the third inning

In the first two innings, both pitchers came out executing their plan as neither team’s hitters could get a run past the plate.

The scoreboard would not stay silent for long as the Hornets would score two runs in the top of the third inning.

The scoring inning started with Jonah Cunnigan hitting a two-out single to the right field.

Caitlin Meyer would be the next batter up as she would hit a two-out, two-run home run which scored Cunnigan and herself to give Delaware State a 2-0 lead.

Howard would score one run in the fourth inning

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the second batter up for Howard would be Kalita Dennis, and she would hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1.

Delaware State adds one more run in the sixth inning

The top of the sixth inning started with Jaelyn Baker hitting a double to the right side of the field. Gabriela Garcia would come into the game as a pinch-runner for Baker.

Two batters later, Alaena Selden would hit a single to center field, which would score Garcia to give the DSU a 3-1 lead.

Bison tie the game up in the seventh inning

Howard was not going down without a fight as the team scored two runs in the seventh inning.

The first run in the seventh inning for the Bison came when Luz Aguilasocho grounded out, which would advance Sydni Jones to third base, but Delaware State’s first baseman had a throwing error causing Jones to score. Jones’s run would cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning.

The tying run of the game came from Howard’s Trinity Gibbs as she hit a single, which would score Ayana Sallee.

Hornets win it in eight innings

The top of the eighth inning started with Hannah Crumlish hitting a single up the middle of the field.

Alaena Selden would be the next batter up for DSU as she would hit a single but would advance to second base from Howard’s throw.

Madison Burnite would come up to bat as she would reach base on a fielder’s choice, but Crumlish would score to give Delaware State a 4-3 lead.

Pitcher McKenzie Yurcaba would shut down the Bisons hitters for the bottom half of the eight to seal a 4-3 win.
