Fleming records 5 RBIs in Wilmington University’s 12-4 win over Bridgeport

The Wilmington University baseball team earned its 11th win of the season on Sunday with a 12-4 win over the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University leads by six at the end of the fourth inning.

Brideport started the scoring in this game by sending a runner home on an RBI single through the left side in the top of the first inning to give them a 1-0 edge.

WilmU would respond in the bottom of the inning with Junior pitcher/first baseman Chase Fleming knocking a RBI single through the right side to tie the game at one.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Cats would take the lead when Senior outfielder Cam Trego scored on a groundout to give his team a 2-1 advantage.

Fleming would come up big for Wilmington once again, as he slapped a two-run triple to right-center to give his team a 4-1 lead in the third.

The fourth inning would see the Cats score three runs on two hits, two errors, three stolen bases, and one walk to give them a nice cushion of a 7-1 edge over the Purple Knights.

Junior outfielder/pitcher Brandon Grygo started the scoring in the inning by hitting an RBI single to right field. On the next play, Junior shortstop Justin Hernandez stole home. Senior infielder Tyler Pirrung would come up to the plate next and knock an RBI double down the first base line to put his team up 7-1.

WilmU takes home a 12-4 win!

Bridgeport wasn’t done fighting, as an RBI single and double in the top of the fifth inning brought the score to 7-3.

The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with Justin Hernandez hitting a RBI single to center field and Brandon Grygo slugging a RBI double down the left field line to give their team a 9-3 advantage.

The Purple Knights would add another run at the top of the seventh to cut the score 9-4.

It wouldn’t phase Wilmington as in the bottom of the eighth, as Tyler Pirrung hit an RBI single to center field, and Chase Fleming slugged a two-run RBI double to right center to seal a 12-4 win over the Bridgeport.

Pitching Recap:

WilmU used four pitchers in the win, including junior pitcher Xavier Cortez, who went six innings, gave up six hits, three runs, three earned runs, struck out five, and earned the win.

Senior pitcher Scott Borgmann finished the game by pitching 1.2 innings, one walk, striking out two batters, and earning the save.
