Wilimington University Dominates Late Game 23-10 for Saturday Split Against Bridgeport

The Wilmington University baseball team split Saturday’s doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, dropping the opener 15-11 before bouncing back to claim a decisive 23-10 victory in game two.

Wilmington University holds a one-run lead after the first inning.

The Wildcats did not waste any time at the top of the opening inning of the game, as they scored two runs, had three hits, one walk, and stole a base during that time.

Junior pitcher/first baseman Chase Fleming started the scoring by hitting an RBI double to give his team a 1-0 edge.

Sophomore outfielder Brian Klumpp came up next to the plate and singled, which scored Fleming to give WilmU a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the first, Bridgeport would respond by hitting an RBI single to cut the deficit to one run (2-1) heading into the second inning.

The Wildcats lead by two after a wild third inning.

The top of the second inning belonged to Senior infielder Tyler Pirrung, who hit a RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch to give Wilmington a 4-1 lead.

Bridgeport had a two-run double in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit back to one (4-3) heading into the third.

In the third inning, the offense was firing for both teams as they combined for 13 runs.

It all started with WilmU, who scored seven runs on seven hits and one error to take an 11-3 edge in the top of the inning.

Junior outfielder D’Angelo Ponce  and Senior outfielder Cam Trego each knocked an RBI double in to send a runner home. Junior utility player/ pitcher Stephen Katch scored on a wild pitch.

Also,  junior  outfielder/pitcher Brandon Grygo punched two teammates home with a two-run single, and junior infielder/pitcher Chase Fleming had an RBI single in the inning.

The Purple Knights packed a punch of their own in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on three hits to tighten the score to 11-9.

They had a two-run single and a two-run double in the bottom of the inning.

WilmU holds a ten-run lead after the end of the sixth inning.

The Wildcats came into the sixth leading by four (14-10), but by the end of the inning, they would lead by ten (20-10) after scoring six runs on four hits.

D’Angelo Ponce and junior catcher Kyle Lowman each had an RBI walk in the top of the sixth. Chase Fleming would hit an RBI double, and then later in the inning, he pushed a runner home when he got hit by a pitch. Junior shortstop Justin Hernandez sent two of his teammates home when he hit a two-run single.

Wilmington University takes home a 23-10 win!

The Cats would wrap up the win in the seventh by scoring three more runs on two hits to seal a 23-10 victory.

Pitching Recap:

Junior shortstop/pitcher Garrett Quinn earned the win, as he pitched five innings, gave up five hits, four runs, four earned runs, four walks, and struck out eight.
