The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned its fifth win of the season on Sunday with a 73-61 win over the Division II Holy Family Tigers.
Sophomore guard Ponce James led the team in scoring in the win, with 16 points.
Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Junior forward Ademar Santos (11) and senior guard Zion Bethea (14).
Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (34-22), fast-break points (18-0), points off of turnovers (17-15), blocks (2-0), assists (16-13), and rebounds (27-22).
DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 58%(28-48) and Holy Family shooting 40%(22-55). The Hornets were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 55%(6-11), and the Tigers shot 36% (10-28).

Holy Family came out strong in the early minutes of this game, as they jumped out to a 16-6 edge with 15:21 remaining in the opening period.
The Hornets roared back by dashing off on an 18-5 run to grab a 24-21 advantage with 10:05 left in the first half. Senior forward Bessanty Saragba and Zion Bethea led the charge during this time, scoring 12 of the 18 points.
DSU continued to power ahead as the team outscored the Tigers 19-13 for the rest of the first half to hold a 43-34 lead. Bethea and Senior guard Camian Shell were a handful for Holy Family’s defense to deal with as they scored ten of the 19 points.

Delaware State continued to play at a high level in the early minutes of the second half, blasting off on an 11-3 run to expand their advantage to 54-37. Ponce James and Ademar Santos had the hot touch during that drive, scoring nine of the team’s 11 points.
Holy Family was not done fighting in this game, as the team clawed back by outscoring DSU 16-6 to pull the deficit to six points (59-53) with 7:18 left in the game.
The Hornets didn’t lose their lead as they would respond with a 14-8 run for the rest of the half to seal a 73-61 win over the Tigers. Bessanty Saragba and James powered the late scoring by scoring nine of the 14 points.
