Horsey drops 21 in Wilmington University’s 78-71 win over Pace

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team has now won back-to-back games with a 78-71 win over the Pace University Setters.

Sophomore guard Jaylin Horsey led the team in scoring in the win, with 21 points.

Four other Wilmington players who scored in double digits were senior guard Justin Perez (12), Sophomore forward Tre Hawkins (14), junior guard Akeem Taylor (15), and Junior guard Jaiden Guy (12).

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, including bench points (14-7), bench points (13-8), turnovers (11-13), and rebounds (25-24).

The Wildcats also bested Pace at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 95.7%(22-23), and the Setters shot 33.3%(3-9).

Wilmington University trails by four at the end of the first half.

Pace didn’t waste any time finding a rhythm in this game, as they jumped out to a 20-9 lead with 11:53 remaining in the opening half.

The Wildcats clawed right back into the game after this, outscoring the Setters 29-18 to tie the score at 38 with 1:15 left in the first half. Jaylin Horsey and Justin Perez led the charge, scoring 19 of the 29 points. The duo was also on fire from the three-point line, draining five shots between them.

Pace took back the lead in the remaining minutes by going on a 6-2 run to take a 44-40 edge into halftime.

The Wildcats take home a 78-71 win!

Wilmington had the momentum on its side in the early minutes of the second half, outscoring the Setters 16-5 to grab a 56-49 advantage with 13:12 left in the game. Jaylin Horsey and Tre Hawkins gave the Pace defenders trouble during this run, scoring 14 of the 16 points.

Seconds later, the Setters went on an 8-2 run to slice the deficit to one point (58-57) with 10:03 remaining in the second half.

Justin Perez and Jaiden Guy shone down the stretch for the WilmU, scoring 14 of their final 20 points to seal a 78-71 win over Pace.
