Fantroy records double-double in Blue Hens 68-57 win over American

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team earned its second victory of the season on Monday with a 68-57 win over the American University Eagles.

Freshman guard Kailah Correa led the team in scoring in the win with 18 points.

Junior guard Lay Fantroy recorded a double-double in the game with 16 points and 20 rebounds.

Two other Hens players scored in double digits: Sophomore guard Trinity Vance (10) and junior center Ande’a Cherisier (15).

UD had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (44-32), fast-break points (12-11), points off of turnovers (17-6), turnovers (12-15), blocks (3-2), steals (8-6), and rebounds (43-29).

The Blue Hens also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 44%(28-64) and American 42%(23-55). UD also bested the Eagles from the three-point line, with the team shooting 33%(3-9) and American shooting 23%(5-22).

The University of Delaware leads by nine after one quarter of play.

UD came out in the opening period with a bang, outscoring American 21-12, with Kailah Correa and Lay Fantroy combining for 13 of those 21 points.

It’s all tied up at 30 at the end of the first half.

The Eagles punched back in the second quarter, as they outscored the Blue Hens 18-9 to tie the game at 30 heading into halftime.

UD leads by six at the end of the third quarter.

In the first three minutes and 75 seconds of the third quarter, American still had the momentum from the second on their side, outscoring Delaware 12-8 to take a four-point edge (42-38) with 6:25 on the clock.

The University of Delaware finally found a groove after this, as they went on a 15-5 run for the rest of the third to head into the fourth with a 53-47 lead. Kailah Correa led the charge on this run, scoring eight of the team’s 15 points.

The Blue Hens take home a 68-57 win!

UD’s advantage stretched to eight (61-53) when junior guard Safi Kolliegbo hit a jump shot at the 5:56 minute mark in the fourth quarter.

Delaware outscored the Eagles 7-4 for the rest of the period to seal a 68-57 victory.
