The Wilmington University men’s basketball team moved its record to 2-0 after a tough 84-83 overtime victory over the D’Youville University Saints on Saturday.
Sophomore forward Tre Hawkins led the team in scoring in the win with 19 points. He also recorded a double-double by collecting 16 rebounds.
Four other Wilmington players who scored in double digits were Sophomore guard Denim Perkins (17), Junior guard Jaiden Guy (15), Sophomore guard Jaylin Horsey (10), and senior guard Justin Perez (15).
WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, including bench points (16-2), fast-break points (15-9), points in the paint (22-18), points off of turnovers (21-13), turnovers (12-15), and steals (9-7).
The Wildcats were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 35.3%%(6-17), and D’Youville shot 34.4% (11-32). WilmU also bested the Saints at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 79.2%(38-48), and the D’Youville shot 56.0%(14-25).

The game was tied at 38 at the end of the first half.
D’Youville came out swinging in the early minutes of the opening half by jumping out to a 12-4 lead with 14:37 on the clock.
WilmU punched back by outscoring the Saints 26-16 to grab a 30-28 edge with 4:39 left in the first half. It wasn’t just one person on fire during this run for the team, as Denim Perkins, Jaiden Guy, Jaylin Horsey, Justin Perez, and Tre Hawkins caused problems for D’Youville’s defense, scoring all 26 points.
Fast forward to the 1:38 minute mark, where Perez drained a three-pointer to give the Cats a 38-36 advantage.
The Saints would hit a layup with 46 seconds to go into halftime with the game tied at 38.
The game heads to overtime after it’s tied at 75 at the end of regulation.
For most of the second half, the lead bounced back and forth with either team holding a slim lead.
At the 5:20 minute mark, Demin Perkins would hit a layup to give Wilmington a 67-62 advantage.
D’Youville struck right back by outscoring the Wildcats 13-8 in the final minutes of the game to force the match to head to overtime with a tied score of 75.

The Saints started fast in the early minutes of the overtime period, taking an 82-76 lead with 2:23 remaining in the game.
WilmU roared right back and outscored D’Youville 8-1 to seal an 84-83 victory over the Saints. Five of their eight points in the overtime period came from the free-throw line.
