Jones Scores 23 Points as Goldey-Beacom Defeats District of Columbia 89-78

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team moved its record to 2-0 on the season with a 89-78 victory over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds on Saturday.

Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones led the team in scoring with 23 points.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were junior guard Masud Stewart (11), Sophomore guard Tre Powell (17), and junior forward  Julian Williams (11).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (18-10), second-chance points (28-8), points off of turnovers (25-10), turnovers (10-21), rebounds (42-41), and steals (14-5).

GBC also outshot UDC from the three-point line, with the team shooting 24.2%(8-33) and the Firebirds shooting 21.4% (3-14).

Goldey-Beacom trails by ten points at the end of the first half.

The District of Columbia came out firing in the early minutes of the opening half as they dashed out to a 10-3 advantage.

Fast forward to the 2:27 minute mark, where the Firebirds’ Michael Harrell rocked the rim for a slam dunk to give his team a 17-point edge (45-28).

The Lightning showed some fight in the remaining minutes of the first half by outscoring UDC 9-2 to slice the deficit to ten points (47-37). Four of the nine points came from the free-throw line.

The Lightning takes home an 89-78 win!

GBC’s momentum from the first rolled into the early minutes of the second, as the team went on a 19-5 run to take a 56-52 advantage with 12:26 left in the game. Emarquis Jones and junior guard Elisha Brown were seeing the bucket with ease during that stretch, scoring 12 of the team’s 19 points.

Fast forward to the six-minute mark, where Goldey-Beacom’s lead went to seven (71-64), when Masud Stewart drained a three-pointer.

The Lightning scored 18 more points for the rest of the game to seal a 89-78 victory over the Firebirds. Jones and Tre Powell led the charge during that stretch, scoring 12 of the 18 points.
