The Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team opened the 2025-2026 season with a 90-68 victory over the D’Youville University Saints on Friday.
Sophomore guard Tre Powell led the team in scoring in the win with 22 points.
Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were sophomore guard Brian Blanchet (17), senior guard Justin Allen (14), and junior guard Masud Stewart (10).
The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included Points off turnovers (42-20), fast-break points (15-6), bench points (38-30), assists (21-14), turnovers (15-29), and steals (13-6).
GBC also bested D’Youville from the three-point line, with the team shooting 43.2 %(32-74) and the Saints shooting 38.2 %(21-55).GBC also outshot D’Youville from the three-point line, with the team shooting 48.0%(12-25) and the Saints shooting 5.9 % (1-17).
Goldey-Beacom leads by 11 at the end of the first half.
The Lightning didn’t have any rust on them in the opening minutes of the first game of the season as the team jumped to a 22-9 advantage with 12:17 remaining in the first half. GBC was feeling from the three-point line, hitting four shots from there. Sophomore guard Anthony Akande, Justin Allen, Brian Blanchet, and Masud Stewart all drained a three-point shot during that run.
Fast forward to the 6:09 mark, where Goldey-Beacom’s lead stretched to 22 points (39-17), when Blanchet made another three-pointer.
D’Youville showed some fight for the rest of the opening half by outscoring the Lightning 14-3 to pull the deficit to 11 points ( 42-31).
The Lightning takes home a 90-68 win!
GBC came out firing in the early minutes of the second half by dashing off on a 22-6 run to take a 64-37 edge with 12:49 left in the game. Tre Powell, Masud Stewart, and Justin Allen gave the Saints’ defense fits, as the trio scored 17 of the team’s 22 points.
Fast forward to the 5:13 minute mark, where Goldey-Beacom’s lead ballooned to 28 points (82-54), when Anthony Akande made a layup.
D’Youville outscored the Lightning for the rest of the second half 14-8, but Goldey still took home a dominating 90-68 victory.
