The Delaware State University men’s basketball team opened the season on Wednesday with a tough 83-65 loss versus the Temple University Owls.
Turnovers cost the Hornets in this game as they committed 16 turnovers, while the Owls only had six. Temple scored 21 points when DSU lost possessions.
Points in the paint were another weak area for DSU in this loss, as Temple had 46 and Delaware State had 30.
Despite all that, three Hornets players did all they could to keep their team in the game: sophomore guard Ponce James, senior guard Zion Bethea, and junior forward Ademar Santos.
The trio scored 51 of DSU’s 65 points in the loss, with the rest of the team contributing only 14 points.
Bethea led the team in scoring in the game with 20 points. He made seven of his 14 shots and drained four of seven tries from the three-point line. Zion also hit two of three shots from the free-throw line.
James was right behind Bethea with 16 points in the loss. He made six of his 11 shots in the game. Ponce also drained all four of his shots at the foul line.
Santos rounded out the scorers with 15 points in the game. He had made six of his nine shots and drained three of four attempts from the three-point line.
The Hornets stay on the road to take on Syracuse on Saturday.
