Amya Scott records 18 points in Delaware State’s season-opening 66-55 win over Felician

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team opened the season with a 66-55 win over the Division II Felician University Golden Falcons on Wednesday.

Freshman guard Amya Scott led the Hornets in scoring in the game with 18 points.

Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Freshman guard Nevaeh Reaves (10) and junior guard Mahogany Cottingham (12).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (34-28), points off of turnovers (15-6), blocks (2-0), assists (12-10), and rebounds (44-39).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 47.9(23-48) and Felician 27.9(17-61). The Hornets also outshot Golden Falcons at the three-point line, with the team shooting 28.6(4-14), and Felician 8.3(1-12).

Delaware State leads by one at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets came out fast to start the opening game of the season, as they jumped to a 9-3 edge with 6:39 remaining in the first. Nevaeh Reaves made trouble for the Golden Falcons’ defense, scoring five of the nine points.

Felician roared back by outscoring DSU 13-8 for the rest of the quarter to slice the deficit to one point (17-16).

The Hornets lead by three points at the end of the first half.

In the second quarter, the Division II Felician continued to hang around, as most of the time they were only down one point or at the most four. Delaware State took a slim 32-29 edge into halftime thanks to the play of Nevaeh Reaves, Amya Scott, and junior guard Kaitlyn Adams.

The trio combined for ten points, two steals, and two rebounds during this time.

DSU leads by 11 at the end of the third quarter.

The Hornets came out blazing in the early minutes of the second half, as the team dashed off on a 9-2 run to take a 41-31 advantage with 6:13 left in the third. Amya Scott led the charge for DSU on this run, scoring five of the nine points.

Delaware State dropped 12 more points in the period to head into the fourth with a comfortable 53-42 lead.

Delaware State takes home a 66-55 win!

Fast forward to the 6:02 minute mark in the fourth quarter, when Kaitlyn Adams hit a layup to give DSU a 16-point edge (62-46).

The Golden Falcons would outscore the Hornets 9-4 for the rest of the quarter, but Delaware State still took home an 11-point victory (66-55).
