JJ Killen’s two-run walk-off double gives Wilmington University a 9-8 win over St. Thomas Aquinas

The Wilmington University baseball team earned a walk-off win on Saturday with a 9-8 victory over the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University leads by four runs at the end of the third inning.

The Wildcats would get on the board first in this match by Freshman pitcher/outfielder Zach Frame pushing in a run with a Sac Fly to take the score 1-0 in the bottom of the opening inning.

Two innings later, WilmU pushed their lead to 4-0, when senior outfielder Kory Pritchard, Frame, and senior infielder Tristan Schoendienst each hit a RBI single.

WilmU leads by one run at the end of the seventh inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, St. Thomas Aquinas cut the deficit to one (4-3) when Chris Ewing pushed in three runs with a double to center field.

Two innings later, Chris Ewing was back at it again, when he slapped a two-run triple to right field to give his team a 5-4 edge.

In the bottom of the inning, Wilmington’s Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Brandon Grygo started the scoring by smoking an RBI double right field to tie the game at five.

Three plays later, Zach Frame earned his third RBI of the day with a single to left field to give the Wildcats a 6-5 advantage.

Wilmington University takes home a 9-8 win!

The Spartans tied the game up at the top of the ninth inning (6-6), with an RBI single to right field.

Extra innings would be needed for this game, and the scoring started with St. Thomas Aquinas pushing in two runs in the 11th inning to take an 8-6 lead.

The pressure was on Wilmington in the bottom of the inning, which started with a walk, strikeout, and a batter reaching base by getting hit by a pitch.

Redshirt freshman Catcher Diego Zerpa scored on the next play when the Spartans’ first baseman dropped a fly ball.

Graduate student first baseman JJ Killen stepped up to the plate next and smacked a two-run walk-off double to centerfield to give the Cats a 9-8 win.

Pitching Recap:

Wilmington University used eight pitchers in the game, and redshirt freshman pitcher John Klepacki earned the win by going 0.2 innings and giving up one hit.
