CAA Tourney second round: Blue Hens upset Campbell 79-62 to move on to quarterfinals

The University of Delaware men’s basketball team is moving on to the quarterfinals of the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament after upsetting #5 Campbell Fighting Camels 79-62 on Saturday. The Blue Hens will now face fourth-seeded William & Mary on Sunday.

Senior guard Niels Lane led the team in scoring in the win with 24 points.

Two Blue Hens recorded double-doubles in the victory, which was Senior forward John Camden and Senior guard Erik Timko. Camden had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Timko collected 12 rebounds and had 19 points.

Junior guard Cavan Reilly also scored in double-digits in the game, with ten points.

Freshman guard Izaiah Pasha was on the boards all day, collecting ten rebounds.

Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (50-40), fast-break points (7-4), turnovers (8-10), steals (7-4), assists (18-10), and rebounds (40-31).

UD also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 49.3(33.67) and Campbell 41.7(25-60). The Blue Hens also bested the Camels from the three-point line, with the team shooting 46.7( 7-15) and Campbell shooting 22.2(4-18). Delaware also outshot Camels at the free-throw line, with the team shooting 75.0(6-8), and Campbell 72.7(8-11).

Game Recap:

Delaware leads by six points at the end of the first half.

The game started with Campbell jumping out to a 16-11 edge with 12:55 remaining in the opening period.

Seconds later, the Hens responded by going on an 11-4 run to take a 22-20 advantage with 7:07 left in the first half. John Camden and Erik Timko led the charge by scoring eight of the team’s 11 points.

Fast forward to the 1:27-minute mark, where Timko drained a three-pointer to push UD’s lead to 31-28.

Delaware added five more points to their score for the rest of the half to hold a 36-30 edge.

The Blue Hens take home a 79-62 win!

In the early minutes of the second half, it was the Erik Timko and Niels Lane show, as the duo scored 11 of UD’s 17 points to give them a 53-44 lead with 10:16 left in the game.

Lane remained hot for the rest of the game, scoring 12 of the Blue Hens’ 26 points to seal a 79-62 win over Campbell and moving on to the quarterfinals in the CAA Championship.
