Waller & Perez combine for 44 points in Wilmington University’s 98-83 victory over Goldey-Beacom

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team closed the regular season with a 98-83 victory over the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning.

Junior guard Justin Perez and Graduate student guard Manir Waller led the team in scoring with 22 points.

Three other Wilmington players who scored in double digits were freshman forward Tre Hawkins  (16), Freshman guard Denim Perkins (12), and senior guard Izaiah Credle (17).

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (20-6), second-chance points (15-8), points off of turnovers (19-12), turnovers (11-17), assists (20-14), steals (13-6), and blocks (3-1).

The Wildcats were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 45.5%(10-22), and Goldey-Beacom shot 33.3% (8-24). WilmU also bested the Lightning at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 72.0%(18-25), and GBC shot 64.7%(11-17).

Wilmington University holds a five-point lead at the end of the first half.

The Wildcats started the game by jumping out to an 8-3 edge with 18:22 remaining in the opening period. Manir Waller and Izaiah Credle each drained a three-point shot during this time.

Twenty-two seconds later, the Lightning would strike back by going on an 18-8 run to grab a 21-16 advantage with 8:53 left in the first half.

In the next four minutes and 98 seconds, the match would go up to another level, with the score being four times, which includes at the 3:55 minute mark when Goldey’s Zayon Marsh made a layup to get the total to 32-32.

Wilmington would end the first half on a high note by outscoring GBC 12-7 to head into halftime with a 44-39 lead. Denim Perkins and  Freshman guard Jaylin Horsey each nailed a three-pointer during this run.

The Wildcats take home a 98-83 victory!

Fast forward to the 11:23 minute mark in the second half, where Izaiah Credle hit a layup to expand Wilmington’s edge to 70-58.

Justin Perez led the Cats in the latter minutes of the second half by scoring ten of the team’s 28 points to seal a 98-83 victory.
