The Wilmington University softball team picked up wins versus Concordia University, St. Paul Golden Bears (8-1), and the University of Sioux Falls Cougars (7-0) on Thursday.
Let’s talk about both wins!
Game Recap GM1:
Wilmington takes a four-run lead at the end of the second inning.
The Wildcats would get on the board first in the top of the second inning, where the team scored four runs on four hits and two errors to take the score to 4-0.
WilmU started the inning with Freshman infielder Gracie Mabrey getting on base from a fielding error by the Concordia-St. Paul’s shortstop.
After the next two batters would get out, Freshman pitcher/outfielder Maddie Vollmar hit an RBI single to left field.
Senior outfielder Tristyn Stewart came up to the plate next and smacked a two-out RBI single to push the score to 2-0.
Graduate student pitcher Delani Sheehan capped off the scoring boom in the second by slapping a two-run single to right field.
The Wildcats hold a four-run lead at the end of the fifth inning.
Delani Sheehan knocked in her third RBI of the game with a solo homer run to left center to give the Cats a 5-0 edge in the top of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the inning, the Golden Bears would cut the deficit to four (5-1) with the team scoring a run on a fielder’s choice.
Wilmington University takes home an 8-1 victory!
The Wildcats would expand their advantage to seven runs (8-1) in the top of the seventh when senior outfielder Eve Serrato pushed in a run with a Sac Bunt and two plays later, Gracie Mabrey and Freshman third baseman Haley Grygo scored on a throwing error.
Pitching Recap:
Freshman pitcher Karen Sickle went four innings, gave up two hits, three walks, struck three batters out, and earned the win.
Freshman pitcher/infielder Kasey Xenidis went two innings, gave up one hit, one run, one earned run, one walk, and struck out a batter.
Senior pitcher Kylee Gunkel went one inning and walked one batter.
Game Recap GM2:
Wilmington University leads by four runs at the end of the first inning.
The Wildcats started this game off with a bang scoring four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 edge in the opening inning.
Junior infielder Cassidy Zelano and Delani Sheehan each had an RBI single in the early part of the bottom of the inning.
Eve Serrato joined in the fun by slapping a two-run double to left center to give her team a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats take home a 7-0 win!
Fast forward to the bottom of the third inning, where the WilmU advantage expanded to 7-0 when Maddie Vollmar hit a two-run single to center field, and two plays later, Tristyn Stewart slapped an RBI single to third base.
The pitching would take care of the rest of the game by shutting down the Sioux Falls offense to seal a 7-0 victory.
Pitching Recap:
Maddie Vollmar went six innings, gave up five hits, one walk, struck out five batters, and earned the win.
Delani Sheehan went one inning and gave up no hits, no runs, or no earned runs.
