Wilmington University opens the season with a split versus West Chester

The Wilmington University softball team earned a split versus the West Chester University Golden Rams on Sunday with a 6-4 win in Game One, and a 5-2 loss in the second match.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University trails by three runs after one inning.

The Golden Rams would light up the scoreboard first in this match. In five plays, they scored three runs on a double to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the opening inning.

The Wildcats would trail by two runs after three innings.

After only producing one hit with no runs to show for it. WilmU’s lineup started to gain fire in the third inning, scoring one run on two hits and an error.

Freshman infielder Gracie Mabrey pushed in Wilmington’s first run of the game with an RBI single to left field to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Wilmington University takes home a 6-4 victory!

West Chester responded in the top of the fourth inning by pushing the edge back to three runs (4-1) with an RBI single.

The Cats punched back in a big way in the bottom of the fourth by scoring five runs on four hits to grab a 6-4 advantage.

Graduate student catcher Emma Zimmerman started the scoring off in the inning with a two-run double to left center.

On the next two plays, junior outfielder Alexa Eisemann and senior outfielder Tristyn Stewart would get on base with a walk. Following that, freshman Utility player Sydney Hatch scored on a wild pitch.

Junior infielder Cassidy Zelano joined the scoring party by hitting a two-run single to the pitcher to give her team a 6-4 lead.

The Wildcats’ pitching did the rest by only allowing two hits with no runs for the rest of the game.

Pitching Recap:

Graduate student Delani Sheehan pitched seven innings, gave up seven hits, four runs, four earned runs, five walks, struck out 13 batters, and earned the win.
