Kiarra Mcelrath scores 20 points in Delaware State’s 77-56 win over South Carolina State

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team earned its fifth win of the season on Saturday, winning 77-56 over the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs.

Sophomore point guard Kiarra Mcelrath led the team in scoring in the win with 20 points.

Freshman forward Ericka Huggins recorded a double-double in the game with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Junior point guard Najah Lane also scored in double-digits in the victory by recording 15 points.

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (32-24), fast-break points (28-6), points off of turnovers (19-4), turnovers (11-16), blocks (3-1), steals (11-10), assists (11-6), and rebounds (40-34).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 46.4(26-56) and South Carolina State 31.6(18-57). The Hornets also outshot The Lady Bulldogs at the free-throw line, with the team shooting 91.7(22-24), and SCS 76.2(16-21).

Delaware State holds a one-point advantage after one-quarter of play.

 Ericka Huggins was seeing the basket clearly out the gate in this one, as she scored all nine points for DSU in the early minutes to give her team a 9-4 lead.

South Carolina State ended the first quarter on a good note by outscoring the Hornets 13-9 to pull the score to 18-17.

The Hornets lead by 15 points at the end of the first half.

Kiarra Mcelrath and Ericka Huggins balled out in the second quarter, as the duo scored 15 of Delaware State’s 22 points to give their team a 40-25 edge heading into halftime.

DSU leads by 13 points at the end of the third quarter.

 Kiarra Mcelrath, Ericka Huggins, and Najah Lane caused problems for the Bulldogs in the third, scoring 13 of the team’s 15 points to help the Hornets head into the fourth quarter with a 55-42 advantage.
