The Wilmington University baseball team opened the 2025 season on Friday with a split versus the Franklin Pierce University Ravens. WilmU took the first game of the doubleheader with a 19-1 win.
Wilmington University leads by one after the first inning.
Senior outfielder/pitcher Brandon Grygo would get the Wildcats on the board first in the matchup by leading off with a single and then four plays later, scoring on a wild pitch to give his team a 1-0 edge.
The Wildcats hold a six-run lead after the second inning.
Wilmington’s bats caught fire in the second inning, as the team scored six runs on four hits to push their advantage to 7-0.
Singles were key in getting batters home this inning, with four RBIs coming from the Cats’ bat. Brandon Grygo would drive in two runs in the top of the second inning with a single to left field.
The three other runs in the inning came from wild pitches or errant throws from Franklin Pierce to push their advantage to seven runs.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Ravens would light up the scoreboard for the first time in the game with an RBI single to take the score 7-1.
Wilmington leads by ten runs after the third inning.
The Wildcats continued to have momentum on offense, scoring four runs on three hits to extend their lead to 11-1 in the third inning.
Brandon Grygo continued his solid day at the plate by slugging an RBI triple to left field in the inning.
Senior outfielder Kory Pritchard and Graduate student infielder Josearmando Diaz each hit an RBI single in the inning. Also, senior outfielder/pitcher Shawn Edevane pushed in a run with a sac fly.
The Wildcats lead by 13 runs after the fifth inning.
Kory Pritchard added another RBI to his name in the fourth when he sent his teammate, sophomore shortstop/pitcher Justin Hernandez home by grounding out.
In the fifth inning, WilmU added two more runs when Shawn Edevane and Josearmando Diaz each scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 14-1.
WilmU leads by 15 runs at the end of the seventh inning.
Two innings later, the Wildcats would continue to find ways to score with a sac fly and an error from Franklin Pierce’s shortstop to expand their edge to 16-1.
Wilmington University takes home a 19-1 win!
Junior pitcher/second baseman Zack Czarnecki was in the spotlight in the eighth inning for the Cats by hitting a two-run single up the middle to give his team an 18-1 advantage.
In the ninth inning, WilmU would push in one more run to seal a dominating 19-1 win over the Ravens.

Sophomore pitcher Xavier Cortez pitched five innings, two hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, and eight strikeouts.
Junior pitcher Steve Schenning closed the game by going four innings, two hits, and four strikeouts.
