Robinson & Smith combine for 49 points in Delaware State’s 90-69 win over Howard

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their 13th win of the season on Saturday with a 90-69 victory over the Howard University Bisons.

Senior guard Martaz Robinson led the team in scoring in the win, with 26 points.

Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Senior guard Robert Smith (23) and freshman forward Kaseem Watson (15).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which, included points in the paint (34-28), fast-break points (17-12), points off of turnovers (27-4), turnovers (8-18), steals (12-4), and rebounds (41-31).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 45.6 (31-68) and Howard shooting 43.1 (22-51). The Hornets were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 57.1(8-14), and the Bisons shot 29.6 (8-27). Delaware State also outshot Howard at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 76.9(20-26), and the Bisons shot 70.8 (17-26).

The Hornets hold a nine-point lead at the end of the first half.

Delaware State started this game on fire by flying out to a 20-8 edge with 11:43 remaining in the opening period. Robert Smith and  Martaz Robinson had the hot hand during this time, scoring 12 of the team’s 20 points.

The Hornets would add 15 more points to their score for the rest of the half, as the team took a 35-26 advantage into halftime. Robinson led the charge on offense, scoring seven of the 15 points.

Delaware State takes home a 90-69 victory!

Fast forward to the 13:59 minute mark in the second half, where DSU’s lead expanded to 15 points (50-35) when Robert Smith drained a three-pointer and then a jump shot about two minutes apart from each other.

Seconds later, Howard’s shots would start falling, as the team outscored the Hornets 26-19 to pull the deficit to eight points (69-61) with 6:22 remaining in the game.

After losing their double-digit edge, Delaware State punched back strong by going on a 21-8 run to seal a 90-69 victory over the Bison. Smith, Freshman forward Kaseem Watson, and Martaz Robinson caused problems for Howard’s defense, scoring 14 of the team’s 21 points.
