Goldey-Beacom opens the season with a 6-1 victory over Mercy

The Goldey-Beacom College baseball team opened the 2025 season with a 6-1 victory over the Mercy University Mavericks.

The Lightning bats struggled consistently to find a spark in this one but the team found ways to get on base with walks and errors to produce runs in this matchup to get the win.

Game Recap:

Goldey-Beacom trails by one run after the second inning.

The game started with neither team getting hit in the first inning. The Lightning did get two guys on base by walks but couldn’t get them in for the score.

Mercy would get the first hit and run of the game in the bottom of the second when John Nisco led the inning off with a triple. Then, two plays later, Gabe Sanders pushed Nisco home with a Sac Fly to left field to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Lightning takes a two-run lead in the sixth inning.

Sophomore infielder Bobby Stewart was on a man on a mission in the top of the fifth inning, as he led the inning off with a walk and then followed that up by stealing second and third base.

He would then find his way home in the inning when senior outfielder Matt Benner reached first base on an error by the Mavericks shortstop. That run would tie the score up at one.

In the top of the sixth inning, senior catcher Adam McEvoy gave Goldey-Beacom their first lead of the game when he slugged a two-run double to take the score to 3-1.

Goldey-Beacom takes home a 6-1 win!

Two innings later, GBC would expand their advantage to 5-1, when senior outfielder Christian Petrillo and Matt Benner scored on an error from Mercy.

Senior infielder Braden Kolmansberger shined in the last inning of the game, as he led the inning off with a double and then Kolmansberger stole third base. Two players later, the senior infielder scored when freshman infielder Jaime Neris Jr. reached first base on the fielder’s choice to seal a 6-1 victory!

Pitching Recap:

Freshman pitcher George Starr went five innings, gave up one run, one earned run, one walk, struck out eight batters, and earned the win.

Junior pitcher Kevin Dillon went two innings, struck out five batters, and hit one batter.

Senior pitcher Gage Bendix capped the game off by going two innings, striking out two batters, and hitting one batter.
