Tre Powell drains late jumper to help Goldey-Beacom get a 89-85 victory over Post

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team took home their tenth victory of the season on Saturday with an 89-85 win over the Post University Eagles.

Sophomore guard Zakari McQueen led the team in scoring in the win with 29 points.

Junior forward Zayon Marsh recorded a double-double in the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Two other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Freshman guard Tre Powell (14), and Senior forward David Robinson (14).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included second-chance points (13-9), fast-break points (7-3), and assists (16-10).

GBC also bested the Post from the three-point line, with the team shooting 48.3%(14-29) and the Eagles shooting 33.3%%(7-21).GBC also outshot Post from the free-throw line, with the team shooting 76.0%(19-25) and the Eagles shooting 70.6%(12-17).

Game Recap:

Goldey-Beacom holds a two-point lead at the end of the first half.

The Lightning start the game by running out to a six-point lead (17-11) with 13:07 remaining in the opening period. Goldey-Beacom would drain four shots from the three-point line during this time, which came from Tre Powell, Zayon Marsh, Zakari McQueen, and junior guard  Justin Allen.

Post would fire back by outscoring Goldey 13-5 to grab a 24-22 advantage with 10:06 left in the first half.

GBC would outscore the Eagles 21-17 for the rest of the first half to hold a slim 43-41 edge. McQueen sunk three shots from the three-point line during this time.

The Lightning takes home an 89-85 victory!

Fast forward to the 8:07 minute mark in the second half, where the Eagles Derrick Thomas II made a jump shot to give his team a six-point (68-62) lead.

About a minute later, Goldey-Beacom hit back by going on a 14-7 run to grab a 76-75 lead with 3:56 remaining in the game. Zakari McQueen and Tre Powell powered the offense scoring all 14 points during this time.

Then at the 3:02 minute mark, Harrison Warnock made a layup to give Post a 77-76 edge.

The Lightning would fire back by outscoring the Eagles 13-8 to seal an 89-85 victory. Tre Powell would hit a jump shot with two seconds left in the game to give Goldey a two-point lead (87-85) as it broke the tied score of 85 a couple of seconds before.
