Goldey-Beacom opens up season with a two game sweep over Millersville

The Goldey-Beacom College softball opened up the 2025 season with a two-game sweep (8-7 & 10-2) over the Millersville University Marauders on Friday.

Let’s talk about Game One first!

Game Recap GM1:

The Lightning takes a five-run lead after two innings.

Goldey-Beacom didn’t waste any time putting up runs in this matchup, scoring two runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning.

The Lightning would add three more runs in the second inning, thanks to two hits and three errors from Millersville to give them a 5-0 edge.

Junior outfielder Delaney Insinga hit a bunt single in the inning and stole second. Senior outfielder Bri Snover had the only other hit in the inning, with a lead-off single. She then would move through the bases with bunts until she scored during Insinga’s play with a throwing error from the Marauders pitcher.

Goldey-Beacom’s lead shrinks to one in the third inning.

Senior pitcher Cat Nelson was on fire for the first two innings for GBC, as the Millersville hitters came up empty during the time with no hits and no runs, but it was a different story in the third.

The Marauders bats started to wake up in the third inning, with four hits that turned into four runs to slice the score to 5-4.  

Millersville really started to find their groove in their fifth, sixth, and seventh batters of the inning. Kendra Bumgardner started off the rally with a two-out two-run double. Then, Jiana Maniscalco followed up with an RBI single, and New Castle, Delaware native Angelina Edwards punched an RBI double to right center.

GBC trails by two runs at the end of the fourth inning.

The Marauders continued to have momentum in the top of the third inning scoring two runs on four hits. Millersville would score on a wild pitch and Kendra Bumgardner’s RBI double.

Goldey-Beacom takes home an 8-7 win!

The Lightning halted Millersville’s momentum in the sixth inning when freshman infielder Josalyn McMillan hit an RBI single down the right-field line to tie the game at six.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Marauders took a one-run lead (7-6), when the team scored on a wild pitch.

GBC’s half of the inning had all the drama in it as it started with senior infielder Alex Lowry getting placed on second and then finding her way to third when Millersville’s right fielder dropped a fly ball.

After the next two batters flew out and struck out, Lowry would score on another dropped fly ball by the Marauders outfielders to give Goldey an 8-7 win.

Pitching Recap:

Cat Nelson went three innings, gave up four hits, four runs, four earned runs, had two strikeouts, and hit one player.

Freshman pitcher Lauren Carbonara went one inning, gave up four hits, two runs, and two earned runs.

Senior pitcher Morgan McLane went four innings, gave up one run, one earned run, two walks, had six strikeouts, and earned the win.

Game two recap:

The Lightning takes a six-run lead in the sixth inning.

Goldey-Beacom didn’t score right away in this one, but when they did it came in bunches in the third inning.

The Lightning runs in the inning came from a Sac fly, an RBI single, and then junior outfielder Davi Jimenez slugged a two-run single up the middle. They also scored on two errors to take a 6-0 edge.

Goldey-Beacom takes home a 10-2 win!

Millersville would light up the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run double to cut the deficit to four runs (6-2).

In the bottom of the fourth, GBC would expand their lead when Bryn Bohmann hit an RBI single to right field and then two plays later another run would score on an error to grab a 8-2 advantage.

Goldey-Beacom added two more runs in the fifth inning when Delaney Insinga and sophomore utility player McKenna Frank each hit an RBI single to seal a 10-2 win.

Pitching Recap:

Senior pitcher Caitlyn Burch went five innings, gave up two runs, two earned runs, one walk and had four strikeouts.
