Late second half surge lifts Delaware State to a 73-66 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their tenth win of the season on Saturday with a 73-66 victory over the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks.

Freshman forward Kaseem Watson led the team in scoring in the win with 21 points. 

Three other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Senior guard Robert Smith (13), Senior guard Martaz Robinson (13), and senior forward Muneer Newton (13).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (36-22), fast-break points (8-4), and rebounds (38-31).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 46.3 (25-54) and Maryland Eastern Shore shooting 36.4 (20-55).

Delaware State trails by three points at the end of the first half.

The Hornets buzzed as soon as the ball was in play, taking a 10-2 edge with 15:45 remaining in the opening period.

Seconds later, Maryland Eastern Shore would punch back by outscoring DSU 25-14 to grab a 27-24 advantage with six minutes left in the first half.

Delaware State would regain the lead (35-31) when the team outscored the Hawks 11-4 in the following minutes, which was capped off with  Muneer Newton rocking the rim with a dunk.

Maryland Eastern Shore would end the opening half on a high note by scoring seven straight points to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.

The Hornets take home a 73-66 victory!

Fast forward to the 5:26 minute mark in the second half, where the Hawks’s Ketron Shaw hit a jump shot to give his team a nine-point lead (63-54).

Thirteen seconds later, DSU would start cooking as the team went on a 19-3 run to take a 73-66 victory over MES.  Kareem Watson, Robert Smith, and Freshman guard Ponce James caused problems for the Hawks’s defense scoring 17 of the 19 points.
