Watson sinks last second layup to give Delaware State a 76-75 win over South Carolina State

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their eighth win of the season on Saturday with a last-second 76-75 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs.

Freshman forward Kaseem Watson led the team in scoring with 23 points.

Two other DSU players who scored in double-digit Senior guard Robert Smith (21), and Freshman guard Ponce James (16).

Delaware State had the advantage in assists (6-4) in the game.

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 58.3 (28-48) and South Carolina State shooting 50.0 (27-54). The Hornets were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 61.5 (8-13), and the Bulldogs shot 31.3 (5-16). Delaware State also outshot South Carolina State at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 70.6 (12-17), and the Bulldogs shot 59.3(16-27).

Delaware State trails by four points at the end of the first half.

South Carolina State would start the game by rushing out to a 13-9 edge with 15:02 remaining in the opening period.

Fast forward to the 8:40 minute mark, where the Bulldogs’ lead would go to eight (27-19) when Drayton Jones hit a layup.

Twenty seconds later, the Hornets would start to find a rhythm by outscoring South Carolina State 15-11 to cut the deficit to four points (38-34) at halftime. Ponce James had the hot hand during this run, scoring 12 of the team’s 15 points.

The Hornets take home a 76-75 win!

DSU came out firing in the early minutes of the second half by going off on a 15-9 run to capture a 49-47 lead with 14:50 left in the game. Kaseem Watson scored ten of the team’s 15 points during that time.

Two minutes and 94 seconds later, the Bulldogs would take a three-point lead (54-51) when Davion Everett made a layup.

In the next five minutes and 48 seconds, the Hornets would regain the lead but would hold a slim lead during that time, until  Robert Smith drained a three-pointer to give his team a four-point advantage (65-61) with 6:08 remaining in the game.

Fast forward to the 57-second mark, South Carolina State grabbed a 72-69 edge after Omar Croskey hit a jump shot and a free throw.

Twenty-four seconds later, Delaware State’s Smith sunk a three-pointer to tie the game at 72.

Eighteen seconds later, the Bulldogs would answer back with a three-pointer to take a 75-72 edge.

DSU’s Robert Smith would close the score to 75-74 when he hit two free throws with eight seconds left in the game.

Then at the buzzer, Kaseem Watson would get a layup to go in to give the Hornets a 76-75 victory over South Carolina State.
