Goldey-Beacom’s strong second half leads to a 75-67 victory over American International

The Goldey-Beacom College women’s basketball team earned their third victory of the season on Saturday with a 75-67 win over the American International College Yellow Jackets.

Sophomore guard Katie Yoder led the team in scoring in the win with 17 points.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Freshman forward Lydia Betz (13) senior guard Julie Kulesza (10), and Junior guard Rory Ciszkowski (11).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included second-chance points (18-16), fast-break points (5-2), rebounds (34-28), and assists (15-6).

Lightning was also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 42.3% (11-26), and AIC 38.5%(5-13). Goldey-Beacom also bested the Yellow Jackets at the free-throw line, shooting 80% (16-20) and AIC 61.5% (8-13).

Goldey-Beacom trails by five points at the end of the first quarter.

In the first seven minutes and 50 seconds of this game, American International’s Peyton Grant was on fire from the three-point line, hitting three from downtown and scoring nine of the team’s 22 points to give them a 22-12 edge.

The Lightning would answer back by going on a 6-1 run to end the first quarter to slice the deficit to five points (23-18).

Fast forward to the 7:07 minute mark in the second quarter, where the Yellow Jackets would push their advantage to nine points (29-20) when Heaven Morris made a layup.

Goldey-Beacom rallied back in the later minutes of the first half by outscoring AIC 10-6 to cut the score to 35-30 heading into halftime. Junior guards Rory Ciszkowski and Karlee Lemon each nailed a three-pointer during this run.

The Lightning leads by one point at the end of the third quarter.

GBC came out with renewed energy in the early minutes of the second half, by dashing off on an 18-8 run to grab a 48-43 lead with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Julie McCarron had the hot hand during this time, scoring seven of the 18 points. Goldey had the right touch at the three-point line during the run, draining four shots from downtown.

The Yellow Jackets ended the quarter by scoring four straight points, reducing the deficit to one point (48-47).

Goldey-Beacom takes home a 75-67 victory!

The Lightning started off the final quarter with a fast start by outscoring AIC 13-4 to take a 61-51 lead with 5:31 remaining in the game. Lydia Betz caused problems for the Yellow Jackets’ defense during this run, scoring six of the team’s 13 points. Katie Yoder and Julie Kulesza scored 11 of the team’s 13 points.
