Jaylin Horsey scores 17 points in Wilmington University’s 81-74 victory over California (Pa.)

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team earned their third victory of the season on Saturday with an 81-74 win over the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans.

Freshman guard Jaylin Horsey led the team in scoring in the win with 17 points.

Two other Wilmington players who scored in double digits in the win were sophomore guard Hamahrie Bowers (16), and senior guard Izaiah Credle  (10).

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included bench points (46-11), fast-break points (6-2), points off turnovers (14-11), assists (14-8), and blocks (5-4).

Wilmington University also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 35.6%(21-59) and California (PA.) shooting 27.8%(20-72). The Wildcats were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 43.5%(10-23), and the Vulcans shot 20.7%(6-29) WilmU also bested California (PA.) at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 85.3%(29-34), and the Vulcans shot 73.7%(28-38).

Wilmington University holds an eight-point lead at the end of the first half.

The Wildcats ran out to an 8-4 advantage with 14:03 remaining in the opening half. Junior guard Justin Perez and Freshman guard Denim Perkins scored six of the eight points during this time.

After California (PA.) tied the game at ten, WilmU ignited their offense to another level by going on a 24-10 run to take a 34-14 edge with 7:18 left in the first half. Jaylin Horsey and Hamahrie Bowers had the scoring touch during this time, scoring 16 of the team’s 24 points.

The Vulcans came clawing back seconds later by outscoring Wilmington 24-12 to slice the deficit to eight points (46-38) at the end of the first half.

The Wildcats take home an 81-74 victory!

WilmU came out in the early minutes with some firepower on offense by outscoring California (PA.) 18-6 to extend their lead to 64-44 with 12:37 left in the game. Justin Perez and Jaylin Horsey confused the Vulcans’ defense by scoring 12 of the team’s

Fast forward to the 6:24 minute mark, California (PA.) would cut the deficit ten points (66-56) when Cam Polak made a layup.

Five minutes and 11 seconds later, the Wildcats would expand their lead to 14 points (76-62) when Hamahrie Bowers hit a layup.

Despite getting outscored 12-5 for the rest of the game, Wilmington hung on to seal an 81-74 victory over the Vulcans.
