Zakari McQueen scores 24 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 87-85 victory over Wilmington University

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned their third victory of the season on Saturday with an 87-85 win over the Wilmington University Wildcats.

 Sophomore guard Zakari McQueen led the team in scoring in the win with 24 points.

Two other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were senior forward David Robinson (15), and junior guard Shane Taylor (16).

Junior forward Zayon Marsh was locked on the boards all night, collecting 12 rebounds.

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (32-28), points off of turnovers (23-16), second-chance points (26-10), fast-break points (16-4), rebounds (37-27), assists (12-11), and turnovers (12-13).

GBC also bested WilmU from the three-point line, with the team shooting 42.9%(9-21) and the Wildcats shooting 33.3%(6-18).

GBC leads by 16 points at the end of the first half.

In the first ten minutes and 54 seconds of this matchup, the intensity of the play was high and any lead never went above five points.

That would all change at the 8:33 minute mark, where freshman guard Tre Powell capped off a 7-0 run with a three-pointer to give Goldey-Beacom a ten-point edge (33-23) with 8:33 left in the opening half.

Fast-forward to the 2:02 minute mark, where David Robinson made a layup to put GBC up 13 points (46-33).

The Lightning would score five more points in the first half to take a 51-35 advantage into halftime.

Goldey-Beacom takes home an 87-85 victory!

Fast forward to the 15:29 minute mark in the second half where GBC’s  Zayon Marsh drained a three-pointer to extend the team’s edge to 24 points (64-40).

Seconds later, WilmU came clawing back into this game, as the team went on a 26-4 run to slice the deficit to two points (68-66) with 9:02 remaining in the game.

At the 4:39 minute mark, Goldey-Beacom would push their lead to seven (77-70) points after hitting seven free throw shots.

Despite getting outscored 15-10 by the Wildcats for the rest of the game, the Lightning hung on to win 87-85.
