The University of Delaware women’s basketball team returned the “Route 1 Rivalry trophy” back to Newark on Saturday with a dominating 73-26 win over the Delaware State Hornets.
Senior guard Rebecca Demeke led the Blue Hens in scoring in the victory with 21 points.
Senior Forward Chloe Wilson recorded a double-double in the win with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore center Ande’a Cherisier also hit double-digits in points in the game with 18.
UD had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (30-14), fast-break points (10-2), points off of turnovers (36-3), turnovers (15-32), steals (16-8), assists (18-3), and rebounds (39-30).
Delaware also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 44.4(28-63) and Delaware State shooting 22.5 ( 9-40). The Blue Hens also bested the Hornets from the three-point line, with the team shooting 39.3(11-28) and DSU shooting 5.9(1-17).

The Blue Hens started this “Route 1 Rivalry” matchup by outscoring the Hornets 16-2 in the first quarter. Ande’a Cherisier could not be stopped during the period, scoring 11 of the 16 points. UD was great on the board during this quarter, collecting ten. The Hens also swiped five steals in the first.
UD leads by 29 points at the end of the second quarter.
Delaware was hot from the three-point line in the second quarter, as 18 of their 26 points came from downtown to give them a 39-10 advantage at the end of the first half. Senior guards Rebecca Demeke (3) and Ella Wanzer (2) drained multiple three-pointers in the period.

UD continued to control the game in the second half, outscoring DSU 34 to 16 to seal a dominating 73-26 victory and take home the “Route 1 Rivalry trophy”.
Chloe Wilson and senior guards Rebecca Demeke and Tara Cousins caused the Hornets’ defense problems in the second half, scoring 26 of the 34 points.
