The University of Delaware women’s basketball team earned the first victory of the season on Tuesday with an 88-82 win over the Colgate University Raiders.
Sophomore Center Ande’a Cherisier led the Blue Hens in scoring in the win with 17 points.
Five other Hens players who scored in double-digits were senior guards Rebecca Demeke (10), Ella Wanzer (12), Tara Cousins (16), senior forward Michelle Ojo (11), and junior guard Jiya Perry (14).
UD had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (40-30), turnovers (12-14), blocks (3-0), steals (8-7), and rebounds (28-24).
Delaware also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 58.3
(35-60) and Colgate shooting 56.4( 31-55). The Blue Hens also bested the Raiders from the three-point line, with the team shooting 47.4(9-19) and Colgate shooting 43.8(7-16). Delaware was also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 75.0(9-12), and the Raiders shot 68.4 (13-19).

The Blue Hens would trail by four points at the end of the first quarter.
Colgate would come out quickly to start this game, as the Raiders jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 8:37 remaining in the opening period.
Seconds later, Delaware’s offense started to wake up. The team went on an 8-2 run to grab a 10-9 edge with 7:03 left in the first quarter. UD sunk two shots from the three-point line during this time, which came from Rebecca Demeke and Ella Wanzer.
Fast forward to the 3:01 minute mark, where Colgate would cap off a 13-5 run with Taylor Golembiewski hitting a jump shot to give her team a 22-15 advantage.
Delaware outscored the Raiders 7-4 for the rest of the opening period to cut the deficit to four points (26-22). Michelle Ojo did a little of everything during this run, scoring three points and collecting two defensive and one offensive rebound.
Delaware leads by two points at the end of the first half.
It was the Tara Cousins show in the second quarter, as the buckets were falling for her with her scoring 11 of the team’s 27 points to give the Hens a 49-47 lead heading into halftime.
UD trails by four points at the end of the third quarter.
Colgate came out strong in the third quarter by outscoring Delaware 25 to 19 to take a 72-68 lead into the fourth. Taylor Golembiewski and Lara Cook gave the Blue Hens defense problems during this time, scoring 14 of the 25 points.

UD came out ready for a fight in the final quarter, as the team went on a 15-9 run to take an 83-81 edge with 2:16 remaining in the game. Senior Forward Chloe Wilson and Jiya Perry were on fire during this time, scoring nine of the team’s 15 points.
Delaware would outscore the Raiders 5-1 for the rest of the fourth quarter to take home an 88-82 victory over Colgate.
