Jalen Robinson scores 16 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 75-61 victory over Mercy

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned their second victory of the season on Saturday with a 75-61 win over the Mercy University Mavericks.

Sophomore guard Jalen Robinson was the leading scorer in the win for the Lightning with 16 points.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were freshman guard Tre Powell (15), sophomore guard Zakari McQueen (11), and senior forward David Robinson (10).

Junior forward Zayon Marsh was locked on the boards all day, collecting 11 rebounds.

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (24-22), points off of turnovers (22-11), second-chance points (18-10), bench points (23-13), rebounds (37-29), turnovers (12-18), and steals (12-9).

GBC also bested the Mavericks from the three-point line, with the team shooting 33.3%(9-27) and Mercy shooting 25.0%%(5-20).

Goldey-Beacom trails by three points at the end of the first half.

The game started with the Lightning jumping out to a 10-3 lead with 15:20 remaining in the opening half. GBC drained two shots from the three-point line during this run, which came from Jalen Robinson and, sophomore guard Zakari McQueen.

Mercy would punch back by scoring seven straight points to tie the game at ten with 13:50 left in the first half.

In the next eight minutes and four seconds, the level of this game would intensify with the score being tied twice (15-15 & 17-17) before the Mavericks took a 19-17 edge at the 7:31 minute mark.

Mercy would continue to expand on their lead in the next minute, as it would grow to seven (24-17) when Taj Chiles hit a jump shot with 6:32 left in the first half.

Goldey-Beacom started to wake up from the slumber, as the team outscored the Mavericks 13-9 for the rest of the half to slice the deficit to three points (33-30).

Zayon Marsh found the bucket with ease during this time, scoring six of the team’s 13 points.

The Lightning takes home a 75-61 victory!

GBC would bring the late momentum in the first half into the second, as the team outscored Mercy 13-8 to grab a 43-41 edge with 10:38 left in the game. Tre Powell sunk two shots from the three-point line during this run.

Seconds later, the Mavericks would tie the game up at 43, when Shedrach Makanjuola rocked the rim with a dunk.

After that, the Lightning would dash off to an 18-7 run, which gave the team a 61-50 advantage with 4:34 left in the second half.  Jalen Robinson and Zakari McQueen gave the Mercy defense problems, scoring 15 of the team’s 18 points.

Goldey-Beacom would add 14 points more to their score in the second half to seal a 75-61 victory over the Mavericks.
