Mahogany Cottingham scores 32 points in Delaware State’s 80-44 win over Cheyney University ( PA)

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team improved its record to 2-3 on the season with an 80-44 victory over the Cheyney University ( PA) Wolves on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Mahogany Cottingham led the Hornets in scoring in the win with 32 points.

Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were junior guard Kyra Lawrence (12), and Freshman forward Ericka Huggins (14).

Sophomore point guard Kiarra Mcelrath found her teammates all game, recording 11 assists.

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (16-6), fast-break points (18-10), blocks (6-2), assists (20-7), and rebounds (41-26).

The Hornets also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 53.6(30-56) and Cheyney shooting 29.4(15-51). Delaware State also bested the Wolves from the three-point line, with the team shooting 51.9

(14-27) and Cheyney shooting 23.5(4-17).

Delaware State leads by eight points at the end of the first quarter.

It was the Mahogany Cottingham show to start the game. She scored all 12 points for DSU, giving them a 12-4 advantage heading into the second quarter. During that time, she drained four shots from the three-point line.

DSU holds a 32-point lead to end the first half.

 The Hornets continued to dominate in the second quarter, as Ericka Huggins, Kyra Lawrence, and Mahogany Cottingham caused trouble for Cheyney’s defense. They scored 22 of the team’s 31 points, giving Delaware State a 43-11 edge going into halftime.

The Hornets hold a 32-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Ericka Huggins and  Najah Lane would bring the heat in the third quarter for DSU, scoring eight of the team’s 12 points to extend Delaware State’s advantage to 55-23 heading into the fourth.

Delaware State takes home an 80-44 win!

Kyra Lawrence and Mahogany Cottingham would take over the fourth quarter by scoring 18 of the team’s 25 points to seal an 80-44 win for the Hornets.
