Delaware State’s strong second half leads to a 70-54 victory over Gwynedd Mercy

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their first victory of the season on Tuesday with a 70-54 win over the Divison III Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins.

Senior guard Martaz Robinson led the Hornets in scoring in the win with 21 points.

Three other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Sophomore forward Kaseem Watson (13), senior guard Robert Smith (10), and senior guard Corey Perkins (14).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (11-6), blocks (6-5), assists (16-10), and rebounds (45-33).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 37.7%

(23-61) and Gwynedd Mercy shooting 34.9 (22-63). The Hornets were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 45.5%(10-22), and the Griffins shot 17.9%(5-28). Delaware State also outshot Gwynedd Mercy at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 77.8%(14-18), and the Griffins shot 41.7%(5-12).

Delaware State leads by two points at the end of the first half.

Gwynedd-Mercy might be Division III, but they came out battling in the first half against Delaware State. The first 11 minutes and 44 seconds, the lead changed five times between the two teams, and the score was tied three times. The last bucket during that time came from Martaz Robinson, who drained a three-pointer to give Delaware State a 17-14 edge with 8:56 remaining in the opening half.

Four minutes and 26 seconds later, the Hornets would push their advantage to seven points (30-23), when Robert Smith made a three-point shot.

The Griffins would come roaring back, scoring nine straight points to take a 32-30 lead with 1:45 left in the first half.

Gwynedd-Mercy would end the opening half with a two-point edge (34-32) over Delaware State.

It was the Kaseem Watson, Martaz Robinson, and Corey Perkins show in the second half as the trio scored 27 of the team’s 38 points to allow DSU to pull away with a 70-54 victory over the Griffins.
