Marsh reaches 1,000 pt milestone in Goldey-Beacom’s 90-74 victory over District of Columbia

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned their first win of the season on Saturday with a 90-74 victory over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds.

Junior forward Zayon Marsh was the leading scorer in the win for GBC with 20 points. Marsh hit a huge milestone in the victory, as he surpassed 1,000 points in his career in the game.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were junior guard Shane Taylor (18), sophomore guard Zakari McQueen (15), and freshman guard Tre Powell (13).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (34-32), points off turnovers (18-16), second chance points (14-2), fast-break points (16-8), bench points (35-16), rebounds (32-26), assists (17-16), and turnovers (10-16).

GBC also bested the Firebirds from the three-point line, with the team shooting 45.8%(11-24) and the University of the District of Columbia shooting 33.3%(5-15). The Lightning was also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 94.4%(17-18), and the UDC shot 75.0%( 15-20).

Goldey-Beacom holds a 23-point lead at the end of the first half.

The game started with the University of the District of Columbia taking an 8-3 lead with 17:23 remaining in the first half. During this run, UDC drained two shots from the three-point line.

Seventy-eight seconds later, GBC would strike back by dashing out to a 19-4 run to grab a 22-12 advantage with 9:36 left in the opening half. Tre Powell and Sophomore guard Jalen Robinson had the hot hand during this time, scoring ten of the team’s 19 points.

The Lightning’s defense was solid during this run, as they had four steals and one block. During this time, Goldey also collected four rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom outscored the Firebirds 23-10 for the rest of the first half to head into halftime with a 45-22 edge. Zakari McQueen, Shane Taylor, and Zayon Marsh made trouble for the UDC defense during this run, scoring 21 of the team’s 23 points.

The Lightning takes home a 90-74 victory!

Fast forward to the 7:10 minute mark in the second half, where Shane Taylor drained a three-pointer to give GBC a 26-point lead ( 76-50).

The Firebirds would outscore the Lightning 24-14 for the rest of the game, but Goldey-Beacom still took home a dominating 90-74 victory.
